History

Origins of Rosporden

At the time Gallo-Roman a villa, in the direction of field, was established on the territory current of Rosporden. To the beginning of XIéme century the count of Cornwall entrusts this region to one of his vassal, the lord of Preden. This last will establish its stronghold on an eminence dominating the Swallow-hole. This one will take the name of Roz Preden, Roz meaning hill into Breton, to give Rosporden later. In order to ensure a better protection of the places, one undertook the construction of a dam barring the course of the Swallow-hole, which was at the origin of the large pond of Rosporden

Rosporden was the chief town of a Châtellenie under the Ancien Mode, often associated with the châtellenies of Fouesnant and Concarneau. From the religious point of view, Rosporden was a truce of the parish of Elliant. This châtellenie of Rosporden was conceded in 1334 by the duke Jean III with his brother Jean de Montfort. In 1382 it will be conceded in Jeanne de Retz.

Set fire to of Rosporden by the Spanish troops (August 1594)

In this disastrous year 1594 Brittany is with fire and blood. The royalist troops supported by English and the troops of the members of a league supported by Spanish were entredéchirent. Spanish, who has 8000 troops in the peninsula, has a solid base camp with the citadel of future Blavet Port-Louis and is building a fort opposite Brest in the peninsula of Crozon. It is that Philippe II of Spain would like to make control on the peninsula. The inhabitants of Rosporden, who were league, made festival with Spanish. Those passed there a dozen days in various plays: tournaments and races of ring. But they were badly rewarded for their hospitality. Indeed, little time after, about thirty Spanish surprised and was killed by the men commander fortified town Conq, future Concarneau, which supported the king Henri IV, around Locmaria-year-Hent. To be avenged, for want of anything better, Spanish was caught some to the inhabitants of the area. They reflect fire at the houses of Rosporden whose roofs were covered with thatch. The city was transformed quickly into a blazing inferno. The fire damaged even the church of which part of furniture and the belfry were flarings. The inhabitants who were not able to escape to them were killed.

In 1974 the commune of Rosporden and Kernevel amalgamates following a referendum on January 1st, 1974
