Roskilde

Roskilde is a city located at Denmark, on the island of Sjælland. Roskilde, became a commune of the " Sjælland" area; after the communal reform of the 1. January 2007. It gathers the old communes of:

Old Amt de Roskilde

Roskilde was the prefecture of old the Roskilde amt (Danish department), which extended on 891 km ² in the center from the island from Sjælland.

Geography

The town of Roskilde is to about thirty kilometers to the western of Copenhagen, and occupies a central position on Sjælland. It almost does not have relief. It is in edge of a Fjord, a long time used by the ships Viking S to profit from its strategic position to control the bay of Kattegat, and more generally the the Baltic and the the North Sea.

History

Roskilde was the capital of Denmark of the 10th century at the 15th century. The Musée Viking of Roskilde commemorates this time, and exposes Drakkar S of the 13th century. A club is even dedicated to the construction of these boats to the old manner.

The Cathédrale of Roskilde is one of major attractions of the town of Roskilde. The fact that this Cathédrale was the only one of Sjælland until the 20th century, and that the majority of the kings and queens of Denmark were buried there testifies to the old importance of the city.

Events

The Festival of Roskilde in the month of July, launched in 1971, became year by year one of the most important festivals pop-rock'n'roll in Europe. It counts on average 100.000 people who gather to benefit from international groups of musics various, as well as single environment.
