Rosa hugonis

The rose tree of the Father Hugo , or yellow rose tree of China ( Rosa hugonis ), is a species of Rosier, classified in the section of the '' Pimpinellifoliæ '', originating in China in the areas of Gansu, Qinghai, Shaanxi, Shanxi and Sichuan. One finds it in edge of forests in broken areas between 600 and 2300 meters of altitude. this species was introduced in Europe (With the botanical gardens of Kew) in 1899 and in the United States in 1908.

Synonymous: Rosa xanthina Lindl. hugonis formed (Hemsl.) A.V. Roberts.

The specific adjective, hugonis , refer to a father British missionary, the reverend Hugh Scanlan, which was at the origin of discovered of this rose tree in China.

Description

It is a bush high from 1 to 2 meters whose stems, brown dark, carry pivots flat and right and lashes on the long growths which bend on the circumference.

The foliage, very light, consists of sheets with 5 to 13 small oval leaflets. With the autumn it takes a remarkable purple color brown.

Flowering very early begins in May, abundant, formed of a multitude of simple flowers, isolated, yellow primula, laid out throughout the stems.

The fruits are brown

Culture and use

It can be used in hedges, even cut mowed after flowering.

  • “Eardomensis” created in 1934 ( Rosa hugonis X Rosa sericea ) with simple flowers intense yellow
  • “Red Wing” ( Rosa hugonis X Rosa sericea pteracantha ) with the simple flowers yellow creams
  • “Headleyensis” with the simple flowers yellow primula
