Rorthais

Geography

Rorthais is a commune of the department of the Two-Sevres (79700), area Poitou-Charentes. It is located more precisely in the historical area of Mauléon. The town of Mauléon, chief town of the canton of Mauléon, knows with the last census a population of 7 326 people, while that of Rorthais does not reach the thousand.

Personalities related to the commune

A noble family, divided today into several branches, bears the name of this commune. This comes from old times, where the lords of Rorthais were guards of this borough. The family of Rorthais, annoblie under Saint-Louis, built in particular the Castle of Durbeliere, built on the site of an older building, with Saint-Aubin-of-Baubigné (canton of Mauléon), between 1440 and 1460. Subistent of this time the tower with cut sides and the enclosing wall with its watch towers of angle. The castle is altered and embellished at the beginning of the XVIIe century; the old drawbridges are replaced by bridges door frames, the terrace bordering the ditches decorated with a baluster, the current porch of entry is built. It carries always today the date of 1631, as well as the weapons of Renee de Rorthais and her Grindstone grit husband, with which returned the castle by equips with his Renee wife, widow of Rorthais. " Today, the memory of Henri of Rochejacquelein, called Mr Henri, model of nobility and bravery, is still long-lived among royalists and it remains one of the favorites of the Vendean people.

During the combat, which devastate the area in 1793 and 1794, the castle of Durbelière is burnt with five recoveries by the republican troops of General WESTERMANN. The ruins of Durbelière always belong to the descendants of ROCHEJAQUELEIN, surrounded secular ponds and trees.
