Roquefort is a common French, located in the department of the Landes and the area Aquitaine.

Geography

History

It is with the Viscount of Marsan that one owes construction with the Xe century of the fortress of Pènecadet which dominates the junction of the Estampon and of the Twelve. From the XII° century, the town of Roquefort is protected behind walls and constitutes a Castelnau around its castle. About the middle of this same century, the Château becomes decayed and too uncomfortable, urging the lord to change dwelling. Bénédictins depend on powerful the Abbaye of Saint-Sever are installed then on the site to create a Prieuré and build a Romance church by using the walls of the old castle.

In 1357, Gaston Phébus, Viscount of Marsan, establishes a country house on this site, which becomes an important relay for the pilgrims going to Saint-Jacques-with-Compostelle on the Via Lemovicensis. The order of Antonins is also established in the city, helping the pilgrims to cross the rivers and the area testing at the time of the Petites Moors.

During centuries, the city entered the possessions of Philippe Beautiful the until 1295, and was visited by François Ier in 1526, by Louis XIV in 1660 and by Napoleon in 1808.
