Roquefort-on-Soulzon is a common French, located in the department of the Aveyron and the area the Midday-Pyrenees. Its inhabitants is called Roquefortais. The commune is mainly known thanks to the Fromage of the same name, the roquefort. Roquefort is before a whole industrial village where nearly thousand people work with the refining of this cheese.

Geography

Roquefort-on-Soulzon is located in the Massif Central in edge of the Causse of Larzac in the Regional natural park of the Large Causses. The village overhangs a narrow valley traversed by the Soulzon and is leant with the side of Combalou.

Natural Grotte S were created by the collapse of the calcareous plate of Combalou, in edge of the Grands Causses. On two kilometers only, one gigantic crack gave rise to caves and to faults called “fleurines” which, today still, ensure a perfect ventilation the cellars arranged by the man in the rock, the Cellars of Roquefort where the cheese is refined which took the name of it, the roquefort.

Lauras is a village of 400 inhabitants located at 3 km of Roquefort-on-Soulzon, where are the Société cellars. Its grounds are very fertile in Fossile S.

History

  • Site attended since of the millenia as attests of them the rich person vestiges of his prehistoric museum. As of the chasséen, 4.000 front J.C., the site are unresolved occupied of continuity until our days. Qualiifié in 1948 per Louis Balsan, Capital of the prehistory of Large Causses.
