History

Roquebrune-sur-Argens is a thousand-year-old city. It is at the 11th century that the commune was founded under the Latin name of Rocca bruna , in reference to the Rocher which overhangs the village. In 973, Guillaume Ier, Count de Provence drive out the Sarrasins which had invaded the area since more than one century. From there, the village passed all the Moyen-âge in insulation safe from its walls, avoiding as well the invaders as the epidemic S, the such Black Death. At the 15th century, prosperity returns and constructions start to extend out of the fortifications, for lack of place. Its opening on the world will concretize only in 1829, during the construction of the Pont of Argens which connects Roquebrune to the road of Italy .
