History

Roppe ( Rotbach or Roppach , as one finds it named formerly), is one of the villages quoted in the oldest document concerning with these grounds of the Door of Burgundy. It is mentioned as a Marche in a charter gone back to 792 and in 828 the abbey of Masevaux had goods in the walk of Roppe. During the War Thirty Year old, the castle of Roppe was taken by the Swedish troops and it became a den for Croatian mercenaries who devastated the surroundings. It was taken again and put at bag by the troops of the count of Suze in September 1635, a few months before this one does not seize the town of Belfort. On the religious level Roppe belongs to the parish of Phaffans, Baroche and had only one simple vault castrale which, in 1592, was dedicated to Saint Wolf. Thereafter, in the files, one meets it devoted to Sainte Catherine or Holy Marguerite.

Already at the 17th century iron ore, whose the basement (Jurassic superior) of Roppe and the close villages is rich (Eguenigue, Phaffans…), was exploited in career and using well-galleries to be molten in the furnaces of Belfort or Masevaux the production of ore in grains containing 30 to iron 40% reaches a level of 72 meter-cubic per month. In 1785 a flood puts an end to in-depth extraction. An attempt to make use using a steam engine took place at the XIXe century but it ran up against the competition of cheaper Lorraine iron.

At the beginning of November 1870 took place a battle between Prussian troops and Frenchwomen who turned to the advantage of the first, the face was maintained but the fortified town of Belfort was encircled. After the signature of the Treated of Frankfurt which left Roppe in France, the military authority decided reforcer the protection of Belfort by a line of fortifications whose important component was built between 1874 and 1887 on the highest top of the territory of the commune. The line Belfort Lachapelle-under-Rougemont of the Railroad of local interest of the Territory of Belfort crossed Roppe before continuing towards Denney and Phaffans.
