Rope

On a Sailing ship, the rope is a rope being used to hoist a Vergue or a sail on its Espar (for example the rope of Grand-voile is used to hoist the mainsail at the head large Mât).

Until the middle of the 20th century, the ropes are manufactured out of cotton or braided hemp. One can also find ropes metal, or mixed (textile cable/). Today, the ropes are generally designed with a heart in Polyester (parallel hearts), a sheath external braided out of polyester to 16 or 24 spindles, and a pre-stretching. The Polypropylène replaces sometimes polyester for the lighter ropes. The pre-stretching of the ropes prevents the lengthening of the rope by strong wind, where tractions on the rope can be very important. The sail preserves a more stable form thus.

The rope belongs to the current Manœuvres .
