John Willard Milnor (born the February 20th, 1931) is a known Mathématicien for his work in differential Topologie and K-theory.
As a pupil with the University of Princeton, it was twice Putnam Fellow in 1949 and 1950. It then continued its studies with Princeton, supported its thesis on the isotopy of the bonds under the direction of Ralph Fox. After its doctorate, there remained some time to work in Princeton. He currently works with the Université Stony Brook.
In 1962, Milnor received the Médaille Fields for its work in differential topology. Later, it had the National Medal off Science (1967), the Prix Leroy P. Steele for a contribution founder to research (1982), the Prix Wolf in Mathematics (1989), and the Prix Leroy P. Steele for mathematical popularization (2004).
He is editor of the Annals off Mathematics since 1962 and wrote several very influential books, of which Morse Theory , Characteristic Classes (with Stasheff), The h-Cobordism Theorem , Dynamics in One Complex Variable , Singular Points off Complex Hypersurfaces , and Topology from the Differentiable Viewpoint .
Its most known result is the proof that the topological sphere of dimension 7 has several distinct differential structures (28 to be precise). A sphere with such a differential structure not-standard is called a exotic Sphère.
Currently, John Milnor is professor with Université Stony Brook, with his wife Dusa McDuff.
