Roosevelt Island

Roosevelt Island is an island narrow, located in the East River at New York, between the island of Manhattan and the district of Queens. Long of approximately 3 kilometers, its maximum width is only of 240 meters, and its surface is 0,6 km ².

Called Minnahanock by the Indians before colonization, it changed the name of Manning' S Island of 1666 to 1686, Blackwell Island of 1686 to 1921, Welfare Island of 1921 until 1973 when it was renamed in the honor of the president Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

The island was occupied a long time by hospitals or asylums. There was also a penitentiary which was closed in 1935.

Recently, housing developed there with the appearance of residential buildings; there are approximately 10000 inhabitants on the island. Hospitals still exist in north (Coler Hospital) and the south (Goldwater Hospital) of the island.

Roosevelt Island is connected to Manhattan by the subway and a Téléphérique (the Roosevelt Island Tramway brought into service in 1976), and with the district of Queens by a bridge and the subway.
