Rookie

Rookie is an American sporting term which one can translate into French by “néo-professional” (or “beginning” according to the context). With the Quebec, the term rookie is systematically translated by “ recruit ”. It is not either of use with the the United Kingdom. With the the United States, on the other hand, a rookie is a néo-professional in his first year pro. Indeed, the young American sportsmen are amateurs within the university framework then pass professional while joining franknesses, as it is the case in the major collective sports. Certain Europeans also inherit the title of rookie whereas they had often already a statute pro on the old continent (especially in basketball or in the mechanical sports). In these cases, one will choose a translation in French by the “initial” term in order to mark the fact that these sportsmen carry out their first year in these leagues or stables.

The term rookie is to be proscribed in French. There remains however of use in French-speaking Europe, especially in the medium of the Basket-ball.

By extension, one speaks with the the United States about rookie out of the sporting framework when one wants to mean that actor, for example, is initial.

This term is also used in the levels of many video games.
