Rongerik

The atoll of Rongerik (also named Rongdrik or Roñdik) is a uninhabited Atoll of 1,68 km located in the Pacific Ocean. It belongs to the Marshall Islands and is with 200 kilometers in the east of Bikini on the Ralik chain. Before the First World War, Rongerik belonged to the German territories of the Pacific but was not inhabited.

The atoll is known to have been used as temporary place of dwelling of the March 7th 1946 with the March 14th 1948 with the indigenous populations of the atoll of Bikini at the time of the Opération Crossroads, a series of nuclear tests carried out by the the United States. After months of malnutrition for lack of vivres, the populations were moved towards Kwajalein and finally towards the island Kili.

March 1st 1954, Rongerik was exposed to the radioactive fallout of the atomic test Castle Bravo.

Traditions

The inhabitants of the Marshall Islands think that Rongerik is haunted by the sisters of Ujæ, of the demons, which explains the absence of inhabitants before displacement by the American army.
