Roncq

Roncq is a common French, located in the department of the Northern and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

Geography

Roncq is located between Lille and Halluin, but also close to Roubaix, Tourcoing and Mouvaux.

History

Origins

Its name comes from " runch" (man) or of “roncinium) (place filled with bramble). It is quoted for the first time in 1055 under the orthography " Runch". The current name appears in 1330 in a register of the abbey of Marquette.

Middle Ages

The parish of Roncq is located in the district of the ferrain, which belongs to the châtellenie of Lille. It depends on the diocese of Tournai and the chapter of Saint-Pierre with Lille for any question material.

XVIe century

At the beginning of this century Georges de Hallewin is the lord, but in 1555 it passes to the hands Spanish.

XVIIe century

In 1600, the archdukes Albert and Isabelle are accommodated by Charles de Croÿ the lord of the lieus. In 1609, the inhabitants have the agreement to weave fabrics. The city becomes French in 1668.

XVIIIe century

The city is invaded by the Prussians in 1792 and in 1793 the battle of Tourcoing touches the city. It will show a victory of the tourquennois in 1794.

Economy

At the beginning of the XIXe century the principal activity of the city is the manufacture of the fabric of flax but this activity is touched by the English competition which works with imported less expensive raw material of Russia. The modern spinning mills develop with Roubaix and Tourcoing what is fatal at the city.
