Origin and geographical distribution

François Ier had with Romorantin a residence. In 1519, it made come 80.000 seedlings from this type of vine coming from Burgundy.

In France (see Vine growing in France), it is classified and recommended in all the the Loire Valley, but actually, it is cultivated only on 200 Hectare S in Loir-et-Cher where it belongs to encépagement of AOC Court-Cheverny. There exists nowhere elsewhere in an outstanding way, neither in France, nor in the rest of the world.

In 1999, researchers of the the University of California with Davis subjected 322 samples of vine to thorough genetic analyzes. In all, 16 type of vines, whose romorantin, are the result of crossings between the white Gouais and Pinot. It is about the Aligoté, of the green Aubin, the Auxerrois, the black Bachet, the to beaunoir, the chardonnay, the Dameron, the black Franc of the High Saone, of the white Gamay Gloriod, the Gamay, the Knipperlé, the melon, the Peurion, the romorantin, the Roublot and the sacy.

Technological potential

The bunches and the bays of the romorantin are small with averages. The bunch is cylindrical and winged. The type of vine is of good strength but the production is irregular. It is rather sensitive to the gray Pourriture.

It gives a very round white wine, often being able to be collected tardily, with flavors of white flowers, honey, and slightly of prunes. This wine is definitely better after 4 or 5 years of bottle.
