Romilly-sur-Seine is a common French, located in the department of the Aube and the area Champagne-Ardenne. It is the second city of the Aube by its population.

History

Historically, it would draw its name from a Roman fore-mentioned Romulus come to live the area. Voltaire would be deceased there before its skin is not recovered. He had fled the lightnings vaticanes and had taken refuge near the person in charge of the Abbaye, a member of his family.

Near the current Cimetière sets up a cross; the place was formerly a place of worship Gallo-Roman, of which there does not remain any vestige (if they are not traces perceptible by some archeologists near the current cemetery). Between this cross and the current cemetery was located a Gallo-Roman cemetery.

The tank Romilly was the first to be returned in Paris at the time of its release in August 1944. It throne at the entry of the city, a commemorative plaque pointing out this event.

With the dires of some, the current tank would not be the original: this one “would have disappeared” after the tank liberator underwent a passage by Paris in order to give it in state… Of course these dires belongs to the popular rumor and today no concrete element comes to consolidate this idea.

It is at the school of the fountains become thereafter one of the two public colleges of the city, the College Paul Langevin that President Poincaré given the legion of honor to the Joffre Marshal at the beginning of the XXe century (for this reason, one finds at the entry of the college a plate indicating this historical fact).

Economy

The economic activity of the city rested a long time on a primarily industrial basis:

• the workshops the SNCF
• factories of Hosiery of which in particular the Ateliers of Emile Camuset which are the starting point of the mark of the Sporting Coq.
• factories of cycles. The bicycles Peugeot were manufactured there, then Cycles Peugeot became Cycleurope International.

Since the middle of the years 1970 it underwent full whip the industrial crisis related to the increasing competition of the countries with low wages. Closings, the delocalizations and the dismissals multiplied particularly in the textile and traumatisé the population which knew an important exodus, particularly between 1975 and 1982: less 1460 inhabitants. Nevertheless for several years, employment in the services has developed: establishment of departments of health (scanner, extension of a hospital of day), creation of a new retail park on a military waste land (zone of the " Beautiful Idée").

Romilly on the Seine integrates the large Parisian crown gradually (120 km). She knows a real real dynamism related to this proximity. This dynamism also rests on the quality of the local services: cinema Eden, Jean Moulin swimming pool, public hospital and private clinic of the country of the Seine, College Joliot Curie and Vocational school Denis Diderot which make the second pole of the department of it.
