Romas Kalanta

Romas Kalanta (February 22nd, 1953 - May 14th, 1972) is a figure Lithuanian fight against the Soviet occupation . The May 14th 1972, Romas Kalanta was immolé in a public garden opposite the town hall of Kaunas, in sign of protest against the oppression of the occupant towards the language and the Lithuanian culture.

Its immediate burial and in secrecy by the authorities caused May 18th and 19th 1972 of the demonstrations against the capacity.
Malgré the will of the authorities to hide it, the news of the immolation came from to the West, where it highlighted the forced incorporation of Lithuania at the the USSR.
