Lorca wished to regain this traditional shape to celebrate the culture Tzigane, which nourished the culture of the Andalusia. The collection reflects the sufferings of people which live in margin of the company, persecuted by the representatives of authority.
The poems have as a framework Grenade, Cordoue or Seville. They put in scene characters of Tziganes, like Antoñito el Camborio or the nun gipsy, but also of the saints (Sainte Eulalie), of the biblical characters (Tamar and Amnon), of personifications of natural elements (the the Moon, the Vent).
The Romancero gitano is also known for its sensuality and its use of the Métaphore. Many symbols run in the collection. The moon and the green color often symbolize death. Running water and the horse represent passion and freedom.
