The shelter Romaní is an archeological site of the Paléolithique means located at the Cingle del Capelló with Capellades (Comarque of Anoia, Catalogne).

History

He was discovered in 1909 by Amador Romaní. He is located at 350 meters above the sea level and at 60 meters above the current level the Anoia.

Before the Spanish civil war, he is excavated under the direction of Norbert Font I Sagué and Lluís Maria Vidal of the Institut of Estudis Catalans. Starting from 1950, Eudald Ripoll and Henry de Lumley continue the excavations during about fifteen years. Starting from 1989, research is shown by the department of prehistory of the Universitat Rovira I Virgili.

Principal discoveries

The Romaní shelter delivered a deposit of 17 meters power in which 27 archaeological levels were identified to date. These levels correspond to occupations Moustérien born, related to the presence of the Homme of Néandertal. Their age is estimated at 56.000 years BP.

The water resurgence very rich in Carbonate of calcium allowed the completely exceptional safeguarding of negative certain elements out of wooden. The elements thus fossilized make it possible to study the work of wood by the néandertaliens.

Very many hearths were also put at the day. The site did not deliver any human remainder.
