Romain IV

Romain Diogène (1032 - 1071) was Byzantine emperor under the name of Romain IV .

With died of Constantin X, in 1067, his wife Eudoxie became empress. She married little time after Romain Diogène, born in 1032 which was crowned emperor under the name of Romain IV on January 1st 1068.

Qualified administrator and courageous soldier who measured fully the gravity of the threat seldjoukide, he undertook with heat to restore the power of the Empire but he failed because of the opposition in his connection of the Doukas family, as much as state of the army.

In 1068 and 1069, it carried out forwardings in the East where it reinforced the Byzantine positions considerably.

Under its reign, the Normands settled in Sicily and in the area of Naples, ending up driving out the Byzantine of them in 1071.

Romain had to conduct many campaigns in the east of the Empire because of the presence of the Turks Seldjoukides, which ended up overcoming it at the time of the Bataille of Manzikert, in August 1071; Romain IV was captured by their chief Alp Arslan.

Of return to Constantinople, it was deposited by his son-in-law Michel VII Doukas, which made exile the Eudoxie Empress, which died shortly after. Michel VII made him burst the eyes and made it lock up in a monastery, where he died a few days afterwards. Romain IV was buried in the island of Proti.
