Rolladen-Schneider LS10

The Rolladen-Schneider LS10-a is a Planeur of class 18 bills of quantities. It accomplished its first flight in 2003 and the study in setting in production being studied at DG Flugzeugbau after the bankruptcy of the Rolladen-Schneider company.

History

In the Ninety, Rolladen-Schneider, encouraged by its customers, began the development of the successor of LS6. The development was delayed by the priority of the programs LS8 and LS9 and the owner Walter Schneider decided that the LS6 was still powerful in competition.

The initial design was made under the direction of Wolf Lemke. Werner Scholz then developed the prototype, LS10-a. Although the diagrams of the LS10 showed a canopy curved like ASW24, the prototype has a canopy like the LS6 and the LS8.

The first flight took place Egelsbach on June 6th, 2003. This was followed flight test and of an evaluation in competition. The prototype gained the contests of Hockenheim and Bayreuth in 2004 and the championship of allemangne with Lüsse in 2005. It took the second place with the European championship of gliding in Nitra as Slovakia. Displeased articles appeared in the German review Aerokurier made noticed it is excellent quality of vol.

DG Flugzeugbau account to begin the production of the LS10 at the beginning of 2007. Company DG engaged a modification of indicates in order to reduce the costs and intrégré this design in its means of current production, and to supplement the usual process of certification.

A version of 15 meters is likely to be developed in the future. A version Turbo LS10-St is also envisaged, by using the same installation of the engine as LS8-St.

Design of the wings

The LS10 differs from the LS6 mainly in its wing; its other devices are similar. The airfoil which is a derivative of the profile of FX 81-K-130 used on the LS6, having like improvements: a better output aérodynamqie at the high and low speeds, and the reduction of the sensitivity to the pollutiondu profile by the rain and will moncherons them at the low speeds. The wings are equipped with band turbulatrice on the indratos to prevent the formation of the laminar bubbles of separation. This suggests that the profile removed the lack of transition from the Wortmann profile going back to 1981 and is thus more laminar.

The initial design was to have an elliptic leading edge similar to SZD-55-1. However the prototype adopted a triple-conical form which is easier to build and to repair. The model of series will have a thicker profile with the root, due to the flow turbulant near the fuselage (like other recent sailplanes including/understanding LAK-17a, ASW 28, DG-1000, Discus-2 and the Eta).

The wing is built in four pieces. While changing the external extensions, the scales can pass from 15 to 18 meters. The boundary line of the extensions of wings was median on the prototype, a device which appeared the first time on the Schempp-Hirth Ventus 2 and which makes it possible to optimize the scale and the chock of the wing. The series production, however, will have separation with seven meters of the fuselage, as Dg-Flugzeugbau decided to support the constrution struturale and of barge the extensions of wings.

Another improvement of design

  • the system of ballast is composed of four tank integral in the wings. The external tank are filled initially and is emptied in the interior tank to obtain the best burden-sharing. The system of ballast of tail is identical to that of LS8-b.
  • Although a model for a new fuselage with a larger cockpit was prepared at Rolladen-Schneider, the LS10-a prototype thus employs a fuselage of LS6-c with minor changes including/understanding some deferred details of LS8-b and with same ergonomics and resistance at the time of a crash landing.

  • a higher gear landing increases the release of the ground and gives an angle of attack higher than a LS6, leaving a lower speed for takeoff and the unloading. This increases safety at the time of rolling on the short tracks and the exit D E tracks.

  • the LS10 has shutters of coubure on all the scales of the type LS and of the air-brake has double pallet and of the automatic connection of type Eugene Hänle of the ordering of vol.
