Roland Matthes

Roland Matthes , born the November 17th 1950 with Pößneck in Thuringe, is old a German swimmer , four times Olympic champion of swimming.

Roland Matthes is regarded today still as the best dossist of all times. During seven years, of April 1967 until August 31st, 1974, it gained all the tests of back in which it took part whatever the distance. It thus gained four times successively the championships of Europe and three championships of the world and in same time beat 21 world records. It dominated the discipline of predilection so much, the back, that its versatility was often forgotten since. It thus a long time held the records of Europe of the 200m freestyle and the 100m butterfly.

With the Olympic Games of summer of 1968, Olympic Games of summer of 1972 and Olympic Games of summer of 1976, it gained on the whole eight medals (4 times gold, 2 times money and 2 times bronze). It in particular made a success of a double doubled in 1968 and 1972, gaining the title at the same time on 100m and 200m back. In 1976 it takes down its last individual medal with bronze on 100m back. With the relays of GDR, it obtains the money medal in 1968 and 1972 in 4x100m four strokes as well as the bronze medal in 1972 with the 4x100m freestyle.

Roland Matthes was one of the largest Olympic champions of GDR. From 1967 to 1971 then in 1973 and 1975, it was seven times elected “Sportsman of the year” in GDR.

From 1976 to 1982, he was married with the Olympic champion of swimming Kornelia Ender Today he lives and works in Marktheidenfeld as a orthopédise.
