Roland Eötvös

Vásárosnaményi Báró Eötvös Loránd , better known under the name Loránd Eötvös or Roland Eotvos (July 27th 1848 - April 8th 1919) was a Physicien Hungarian.

Nowadays, one especially knows Eotvos for his experimental work on the Gravitation and in particular his study of the weak Principe of equivalence - which postulates equivalence between the inertial mass with the heavy mass - and his study of the gradient of the gravitational field on terrestrial surface

The weak principle of equivalence plays a central role in the theory of the General relativity and the Expérience of Eotvos was quoted by Albert Einstein in his article gone back to 1916 entitled The foundation off the General Theory off Relativity (bases of the general theory of relativity).

Measurements concerning the terrestrial gravitational gradient find applications important in Géophysique such as for example for the oil Prospection. The unit CGS of gravitational gradient was baptized besides eotvos in its honor.

Of 1886 until its death, Roland Eötvös carried out his research and delivered its lesson with the Université of Budapest which in 1950 was renamed in its honor Université Loránd Eötvös
