Rohonczi codex

Origin

In 1838, a manuscript of 448 pages, Codex Rohonczi , is discovered in the personal library of Gusztáv Batthyány. This document is of unknown origin. One is unaware of if it is of a recent forgery or an authentic still misunderstood old document. It could date from the beginning of the 16th century, and be the copy of an older document.

The Academy of Science of Hungary does not succeed in deciphering it. In 1907, it is with Budapest, regarded as collection of “rare Hungarian writings”. It is then sent in Germany, where the appreciation is summarized with “This is indecipherable, it is written there anything”.

The alphabet seems to belong to no Alphabet known, with almost five times more characters (150 characters) that current alphabets.

Finally a translation, but…

A copy arrives in Romania and, only in 1982, a Rumanian academic, Viorica Enăchiuc, after having studied it a few months, affirms capacity to decipher it: the direction of writing would be from right to left, and upwards. It would be about the alphabet of the Daces, and the writing would be in a language similar to the Proto-Rumanian and the Vulgar Latin . But his report/ratio is mislaid among reports/ratios relating to the Class struggle in the Antiquité…

It however carries out a translation and, in 2002, it publishes a book with a translation in Vulgar Latin and Rumanian (translated itself into French). The resemblance of certain forms of the Rohonczi Codex to those used by Daces and even some to the culture “Carla-Pond” (~ 1500 av. J. - C., around the the Danube) gives, according to the editors, of the credit to the interpretation of Viorica Enăchiuc.

This translation is supported by the support of the director of the university of archeology, the professor Napoleon Săvescu, at the time of IIIe Congrès of Daçologie in 2002.

Rumanian is resulting from Latin, but remotely enormously. Moreover, although the words seem to mean something, the sentences present a “odd random direction” (the critics of the Codex speak about it even like automatic result of writing). Thus, the villages beside Bucharest mentioned as strategic points to defend costs which costs, historically known like only are composed of very a small number of inhabitants.

For some, this translation is completely false. The author did not provide yet the precise rules used for the translation, but only one certain “grammar”. Would this be a forgery carried out very well by Hungarian, a practice spread at the time? Or simply is the translation to revise? The majority of the official authorities prefer not to decide.

The analysis of paper itself would prove a manufacture of the north of Italy (in Briquet, France) in the Années 1530 or 1540, except if it is a transcription of the original. Certain pages have Pictogramme S, the remainder is… still indecipherable. The original is preserved at Budapest.

Elements of coincidence with the historical studies

The translation of Viorica Enăchiuc seems coherent. It converges in an unexpected way with the studies on the Viking S made by Régis Boyer. For example, it gives a report on the alliance of Blaks (the Valaques?) and of the Byzantine , with the catches with the Petchenègues, a tribe of Turkish language and the Coumans about 1090. However, Governed Boyer made to him also state of the important fights between the Vikings and Petchenègues themselves, at the same time.

The Rohonczi Codex mentions also a total sun eclipse, which would have occurred in 1090. One can bring closer, by forcing a little the feature, this event of comet of the Tapisserie of Bayeux, which puts the enemies in escape (Halley's Comet in 1066 for the tapestry of Bayeux, and eclipses total sun in 1090 for the Rohonczi Codex).

It was also proposed that the text of the Rohonczi Codex could be written in language Valaque or Proto-Rumanian, but in letters coumanes. These two linguistic systems being completely different, “coding” could have been produced by using the alphabetical system of a language and the linguistic body.
