The rohiric is a built Langue, imagined by the novelist and philologist J.R.R. Tolkien.

In the account of the Lord of the Rings , the rohirique one is the spoken language by the Rohirrim, proud Seigneurs of the Horses of the Royaume of Rohan.

In the novel, however, this language is represented by the Anglo-Saxon . Indeed, Tolkien considered that the relation between the rohirique one and the common language (Westron) of the Ground of the Medium, world where its accounts proceed, was connected with that which exists between the Anglo-Saxon and English. It then chooses systematically to use the Anglo-Saxon to replace the original language which should have been that of Rohirrim in its universe of fiction.

Blow, only some rare terms really rohiric were published:

• kûd-dûkan , an old word which would mean “  inhabitant of a trou  ” and which is related with Kuduk , the name that the Hobbits were given. According to the principle which it retained, Tolkien translates it into old English by holbytla , supposed being at the origin of the hobbit word .
• trahan “  terrier  ”, returned by old English smygel (related with trân in the language of the Hobbits, which is returned by smial ).
• Trahald “  Fouisseur  ”, corresponding to the proper name Sméagol.
• Nahald “  Secret  ”, corresponding to the proper name Déagol.
• lô- (or loh- ) prefix which corresponds to the Anglo-Saxon eo- ( eoh “  cheval  ”).
• Lôgrad “  go of the chevaux  ”, returned by the Anglo-Saxon Éomarc .
• Lohtûr “  populate chevaux  ”, returned by the Anglo-Saxon Éothéod .
• Tûrac which corresponds to the proper name Théoden.

The remainder of time, the Anglo-Saxon is used to make the expressions rohiric (for example Westu Théoden Hál “  You, Théoden  carry well; ”), just as the names of characters ( Éomer , Éowyn …).

Rohirique or Rohanais?

Tolkien generally had recourse to the periphrasis “  language of Rohan   ”, without naming this language explicitly. The term Rohirric , primarily used by the english-speaking, is not in fact not attested in its writings, but was imagined and popularized by Robert Foster in his reference book The Complete Guide to Middle-earth . It would be possible to francize this term in rohiric (with rather only one - R because double - rr- in Rohirrim is explained by the fact that it is about a plural word, obtained by suffixation).

In a text published on a purely posthumous basis ( " The Rivers and Beacon-hills off Gondor" , Vinyar Tengwar n°42, page 8), Tolkien once use the adjective rohanese , which could logically be francized in rohanais . In its Dictionary of the languages of the Hobbits, Dwarves, Orcs (etc) , Edouard Kloczko retains rohanais and rohiric like possible names in French language, with a preference for the second (page 153, §137). Other translators followed the same choice.
