Rogue is a Video game going back to 1980 in which the player explores a vast whole of undergrounds. He is the inspirer of a great number of clones and derived, collectively named “Rogue-like S”, most known being Hack , Nethack , Larn , Moria , ADOM and Angband .

Presentation

The basic principle of Rogue is that the player plays the part of a typical adventurer of the medieval-fantastic roleplays “” such as Donjons and Dragons . The player begins the adventure at the higher level of a gigantic underground, filled of monsters and treasures. The goal of the play is to cut through a path up to the lower level, to recover the Amulette of Yendor and to find again its way to the entry. As long as the amulet was not found, the player cannot go up the staircases which it descended. The underground, its corridors, the monsters which it shelters and the treasures that it contains, are generated by chance, leading to a different part each time.

There in the original version of the play, all the aspects of the underground, including the player and the monsters, were represented by letters and symbols, in order to be able to play on a final text. Later bearings replaced the textual characters by graphs, but the gameplay remained the same one. Movements basic (H, left; J, low; K, high; L, right-hand side) are the same ones as the control of the cursor in the text editor VI. The other actions also require a simple key: Q ( quaff ) to drink a potion, W ( wield ) to carry an armor, E ( eat ) to eat, etc

Authors

The original authors of Rogue are Michael Toy, Glenn Wichman and Ken Arnold. Written for Unix, it was carried by its authors on many platforms, including DOS, the Macintosh, the Amiga and the Atari ST. After having tried to sell these versions themselves, they finally chose to publish them at Epyx.

Many free clones exist for the current operating systems.

Robots

Since the entries and the exits of the original play used an interface text, it was relatively easy to redirect them towards another program. Rog-o-matic was developed to play and gain Rogue and was, seems it, an interesting study of expert system.
