Roger Viry-Babel

Roger Viry-Babel (1945 - 2006), which was defined as a travelling acrobat, is a Universitaire and a Cinéaste French.

Pioneer of the teaching of audio-visual at the University, it passed his life to bind a work cinephilic, teaching and regionalistic.

Biography

Roger Viry-Babel is born on January 19th, 1945 with Mirecourt. Its childhood occurs to Nancy, in the university residence whose his/her adoptive father is director. This childhood passed within the University even will partly explain its real attachment at the University of Nancy. He attends the college Henri Poincaré where he obtains his baccalaureat then undertakes studies of French Literature which lead it to work on Albert Camus. In 1969, it Marie with Francoise Charmoillaux.

The following year (1970), he becomes assistant of French literature to the UER Lettres (Nancy). Within this framework, under the direction of Guy Borelli, it organizes the first conference on teaching and the cinema (Nancy, 1973) and it undertakes a work on the film " Large the illusion" of Jean Renoir. It forges a cinephilic culture (the scenario writer Charles Spaak quotes it in its memories: " Seventy years of adolescence") and a solid reputation in the audio-visual regional one where he learns the trade from scenario writer at the sides of the realizer Michel Guillet.

That leads it to be selected as director of Radio France Nancy (1983-1985). It will give free antenna to several young Lorraine authors of which Lefred-Thouron and Francis Kuntz. During this period, with No5el Nel, he invents university degrees in cinema (license, control then DEA). After a thesis of State on " women at Jean Renoir" and a work (" Jean Renoir, play and the règle" (Denoël editor), he becomes professor of the universities (1987). He is 42 years old and affirms his engagements: in 1989, it is city council man PS of Vandoeuvre-the-Nancy, and in 1992, he becomes assistant large-Master of the Grand the East of France.

This work does not prevent it from continuing to publish. Besides in 1993, it obtains the Prix of the Academy of the Art schools - for the book Co-writing with Daniel Corinaud: " Dolly of the rail" (Denoël editor) - and becomes Associé correspondent with the Académie of Stanislas.

Benefitting from the " plan; University 2000" , it founds with No5el Nel and Eric Schmulevitch the Institut European of the Cinema and Audio-visual the which will be inaugurated in 1994.

Parallel to its university activities, he affirms himself in strategies of production: Producer of the emission " Continentales" (FR3) in 1995, Producer of the emission " I souviens" in 1996, Cofounder of " Era production" (Nancy) in 1996.

In 2003, it obtains the Price Jacques Rosenberg (Auschwitz foundation) for film Co-carried out with Régis Latouche: " French for 42 sous". The whole of its career will be greeted in 2005 by its nomination under Chevalier of Arts and Lettres. He dies on May 15th, 2006 in Nancy.

November 17th, 2007, with Mirecourt (Cinema RIO) the room Roger VIRY-BABEL was inaugurated.
