Roger Henri Charles Salengro is a Politician French (Lille, May 30th 1890 - November 17th 1936)

It passes its childhood to Dunkirk of 1891 to 1904. Studying with the faculty of letters of Lille, it founds there a group of students collectivists at the 19 years age. In 1912, it carries out its military service within the 33e regiment of Infanterie and is registered with the Carnet B, during one of its permissions, to have expressed against the Three Years law.

August 2nd, 1914, it is stopped on order of the prefect of North, just as all the registered voters of the department, and contrary with the instructions given by the Minister of Interior Department, Louis Malvy, not to worry the trade unionists related to the notebook. Released on the intervention of Gustave Delory, it joined its unit and takes part in the combat of Artois and Champagne. It is made prisoner on October 7th, 1915.

Income of the war weakened by three years of captivity, it launches out in journalism and the militancy. It is then one of the principal organizers of SFIO in North, and elected city council man in Lille. It succeeds Gustave Delory as mayor in 1925; he is re-elected in 1929 and 1935. Appointed at the same time Socialist of 1928 with 1936, it becomes in 1936 Minister of Interior Department of the Popular front of Leon Blum. It is him which will announce the signature of the agreements of Matignon.

Because of its action against the leagues, of the newspapers of extreme right-hand side like French Action and Gringoire launch a smear campaign starting from July 14th 1936, calling upon in particular against him a false judgment for desertion which would go back to 1916, and by continuously ridiculing it under the nickname of “Proprengro”. Although this charge of desertion was recognized like unfounded of the years before, the Salengro soldier having in fact captured by the enemy, the polemic swells during the summer in a country still marked by the war against Germany. These calumnies and the insulting qualifiers of which it is dirtied daily lead Roger Salengro to commit suicide on November 17th. Leon Blum will pay a public homage to him and will accentuate its repressive action against mobilities of extreme right-hand side.
