Roger River
Roger Rivière (born the February 23rd 1936 with Saint-Galmier in the Drill - died the 1 {{er}} April 1976 in the same city) was a professional cyclist French.
The Tour de France 1960 seemed to him very intended, but in the descent of the Perjuret, it makes a dramatic fall which puts a premature term at its brilliant career (spinal-cord reached), after only three years and half of professionalism of 1957 to 1960.
Invalid with 80%, it opens a bar-restaurant, " later; Vigorelli" ( of the same name as the cycle-racing track of Milan which allowed to him to beat with 2 recoveries the record of the hour ) with Saint-Etienne, then an automobile garage, and finally a holiday camp in the valley of the Rhone.
The Turn 1960
In 1960 the Tour de France springs without Jacques Anquetil, the French Roger Rivière (4th of the preceding edition) quickly becomes the principal favorite about it. Nevertheless, after the crossing of the the Pyrenees it is the Italian Gastone Nencini who is leader. At the evening of the 13th stage, after the arrival in Millau, the Italian has 1 ' 38" on the French. The following day, the stage crosses the south of the Massif Central to rejoin the Cité of the Popes. On the buttresses of the Mount Aigoual, in the descent of the Collar of Perjuret, Nencini makes the descent. Not wanting to leave any advance to its adversary, and although knowing it better chute, Rivière engages with its continuation.Taking ill-considered risks, given that the yellow jersey would undoubtedly have been caught up with in the plain, Rivière strikes one of the blocks suddenly bordering the road, to finish 10 meters downwards, at the bottom of a ravine, where only a light-weight raft of brushwood will save the life to him, but will handicap it definitively.
Evacuated by helicopter to the hospital of Montpellier, the assessment will be dramatic: 2 fractures of the spinal column and an irrevocable paralysis… End of the career of one of the most promising French cyclists.
Roger Rivière dies the 1 {{er}} April 1976 of a Cancer of the Larynx.
