Roger Ier de Montgommery
Roger Ier de Montgommery (or Montgomery, Montgoméri) († before 1048), was a Norman lord of the 11th century.
Biography
Of Scandinavian ascent, Roger Ier de Montgommery is a lord possessionné in the center of the Normandy. It belongs to the coterie of young person noble which revolves about 1026 around the count of Hiémois, Robert. This last becomes duke of Normandy in 1027, with died of his/her brother Richard III. It then names Roger Viscount of Hiémois (or of Exmes).
Like its duke Robert Splendid the, Roger de Montgommery grows rich by stripping the Church. It tries for example to destroy the borough that the monks of Jumièges have with Vimoutiers to replace it by another which it installs on its grounds, in Montgommery (today Saint-Germain-with-Montgommery and Holy-Foy-with-Montgommery). The duke closes the eyes then reacts under the pressure of the abbot of Jumièges and the archbishop of Rouen. Initially, Robert Splendid the destroys the market of Montgommery and restores that of the monks. Then, it ends up authorizing the creation of a second market on the grounds of Roger.
He is the founder of collegial with Troarn. Later, in 1059, his/her son Roger II of Montgommery will drive out his occupants (12 canons whose discipline left something to be desired) and there will install a community of monks.
After the death of Robert Splendid the in 1035, Roger does not seem any more in favor. Guillaume de Jumièges explains why it is exiled at the court of the king de France Henri Ier, “because of its perfidy”. It is supposed that it had to rebel against the authority of new and very young duke, Guillaume the Bastard one (future William the Conqueror).
Its five sons, remained in Normandy, are devoted to various crimes. One of them, Guillaume, assassinates Osbern, the seneshal of the duke, about 1040. Another, Roger II of Montgommery, ends up joining with Guillaume Bastard the and will thus continue the reputation of the family.
