Roger Ier de Laon
Roger Ier , died in 926, was Count de Laon at the beginning of the 10th century.
Its family origin, is not known, but onomastics suggests a relationship close to the family of Hugonides, resulting from the count Roger of Maine († 900), which could be his/her uncle. He would be brother of Hugues († 900-6), count de Bassigny, which is wire of a Hugues listed in 881.
One does not know perhaps on which date it accepted the county of Laon as of the execution of the count Gautier de Laon, in 892, of which it had perhaps married the widow.
In 922, the marquis robertien Robert I {{er}} revolts against the king Charles III simple the and proclaims king. In spring 922, the town of Laon is besieged and taken.
It is quoted in 923, when the count Herbert II of Vermandois occupied Rémois. Anxious of this rising power, the local barons, among whom Roger, called the king Raoul with their help. Raoul put a temporary term at the ambitions of Herbert, but gave him the town of Péronne, because this last kept in its jails the king Charles simple the and could thus cause an opponent with Raoul constantly. Roger died three years later.
He had married after 895 Helvide or Heilwis, a widow, mother of Raoul Ier de Vexin. Of its marriage with Roger, it gave rise to Roger II († 942), count de Laon, and probably another son, who was the father of Hugues († 977), bishop of Beauvais.
Traditionally, this Helvide is regarded as a girl of Eberhard, marquis de Frioul, and of Gisele, and thus widow of Hucbald de Gouy, count d' Ostrevent and of Senlis. But that would mean that born before 850, it would have had Roger II at the age of at least 45 years, which is possible, but not very probable.
Also another identification is proposed: Helvide, woman of Roger would be girl of Hucbald de Gouy and Helvide of the Friuli. The first husband of this Helvide would be Gautier († 892), count de Laon, which would be the father of Raoul Ier de Vexin, which probably had a son of the name of Gautier.
