Winner of 12 tournaments of the Large Slam, it is with equality with Roy Emerson and is exceeded only by Pete Sampras (14). To federate is currently largely recognized by its adversaries like the best player of the world. If he suffered being younger from a sometimes excessive temperament, making him lose matches against adversaries technically less strong, he is impassive today on the court and lets show through only little of emotions, an attitude which is not without pointing out that of the Swede Björn Borg.
Roger Federer is often recognized for her Fair-play. Appreciated other players of the circuit, it is also by the Journalistes to which it devotes much time and with which it is expressed readily that it is in German, Suisse German, French or English.
One can notice that Federer forever be Swiss champion of Tennis, which can appear astonishing taking into consideration its result obtained in the greatest international tournaments. The only major tournament not having been at least once gained by Federer is to date that of Roland Garros, and this in spite of a semi-final in 2005 and two consecutive finales in 2006 and 2007, stopped each time by the Spaniard Rafael Nadal. It should be noted that it also misses with its prize list an Olympic medal, which remains one of the main objectives of Switzerland.

1981 - 1997
Roger Federer starts to play tennis as of the three years age and integrates five years later the club of tennis TC Old Boys in her birthplace of Basle. It is pulled by Switzerland Seppli Kacovsky of 1989 with 1994 and by the Australian Peter Carter who gives him private lessons until in 1995. During five years, its efforts will enable him to become national champion in all the junior categories. Thus To federate, at the twelve years age, decides to continue its formation as tennis player. In 1995, it integrates the Swiss National center of Ecublens where it does not gain less than seven tournaments juniors of 1995 with 1997. During this period, Federer also will learn how to speak French, which will enable him to make its first discussions with French-speaking people. When at 15 years, Swiss national center of tennis raises, one requires of him which are his goals of sportsman, Bâlois does not miss ambition. If his/her comrades admit “to want to pass professional or integrate the 100 best players of the world”, already clearly affirms to him to want to become “world number one”. Starting from 1997, Federer starts to take part in international tournaments and gains in May with Prato its first great tournament junior. In same time (To federate is then 16 years old), it is decided to give up the school and to concentrate its future only on one career of tennis player. A risky bet because although it started to forge a name on the circuit junior, it cannot live alone of its scores.
1998
The first professional match of Roger Federer goes up in July 1998 at the time of the tournament of Gstaad, which it reaches thanks to a wild card. This same year, on the circuit junior, it finishes world number one and gains at the same time the tournament of Wimbledon (into simple and double) and the Orange Bowl, the semi-official championship of the world juniors. It also reaches the final of the US Open junior.
1999
1999 mark its beginnings in Coupe Davis - in March with Neuchâtel, where it contributes to the Swiss victory vis-a-vis the Italy - and in Grand Slam with Roland Garros where it is inclined with the first turn. It finishes for the first time the year in the first 100 world thanks to good performances at the end of the season. It will gain a Challenger tournament with Brest. The contribution of new coaches (Dr. Guerin & Dariel) gives him more insurance and of serenity on the court.
2000
To federate argument the first final of its career to the beginning of the year 2000 with Marseilles where it is inclined vis-a-vis its compatriot Marc Rosset. At the time of OJ of Sydney, it misses by little the bronze medal by losing accuracy vis-a-vis the French Arnaud Di Pasquale. It passes three turns to Roland-Garros and two to the Open of Australia and to Wimbledon. A new defeat completes this season in half-tone; it finally inclines “sound” tournament with Basle in five sets very disputed vis-a-vis the Swede Thomas Enqvist.
2001
In February 2001, Federer gains its first tournament into simple with Milan and its first tournament in double with Rotterdam with Jonas Björkman. It shines finally in Large Slam by reaching the quarterfinals to Roland-Garros and Wimbledon. At the time of the London tournament, it beats Pete Sampras in five sets hung in eighth of finale, putting fine at the reign of the American on the British grass. This match will remain like single confrontation between the two men. This season finishes like the preceding one by a defeat finally of the tournament of Basle; it is this time clearly dominated by the English Tim Henman.
2002
To federate begins the year 2002 with a victory with the tournament of Sydney. It disputes its first final in Masters Series in March at the time of the tournament of Key Biscayne to Miami, where it east demolishes in 4 sets by Andre Agassi. In May, it obtains a second chance at the time of Masters Series of Hamburg, chance that it seizes fully by dominating easily the Russian Marat Safin finally. Everyone then sees it shining at the time of two Large European Slams. But Federer is inclined with the 1st turn with Roland-Garros and Wimbledon. Some then start to doubt the mental possibilities of Switzerland at the time of the great appointments. At the beginning of August, he learns accidental death from Peter Carter, the captain of the Swiss team of Coupe Davis and trainer of his youth, a man who counted much for him. Very touched by this tragedy, it cannot stop the hemorrhage of defeats at the time of the American round. Nevertheless, a superb end of season enables him to be qualified in extremis for the Masters Cup disputed with Shanghai where it loses in semi-final vis-a-vis Australian the Lleyton Hewitt at the end of a very tight meeting.
2003
To federate begins 2003 on the same high bases as the end of former season. It gains the tournaments of Marseilles and Dubai in February, the tournament of Munich over beaten Ground two months later, reached the finale of the Masters Series of Rome and contributes largely to the qualification of the Suisse for the semi-finals of the Coupe Davis thanks to successes vis-a-vis the Netherlands and with the France. But it is inclined once again with the 1st turn of Roland-Garros vis-a-vis the Peruvian Luis Horna. It gains then the tournament of Halle which is used to him as preparation with Wimbledon where Federer will obtain this year there its first title of the Grand Slam, releasing one set lasting all the fortnight. The end of season is more difficult and To federate carries out average results. It gains however the Masters Cup by beating its adversaries one by allocating its seventh title of the season. It finishes the year in the 2nd world place behind Andy Roddick.
In December, To federate advertisement which it separates from its trainer Peter Lundgren who had been at his sides for 4 years. Perhaps even more surprising, he declares that he does not intend for the moment to have a new trainer.
2004
Thanks to its victories with the Open of Australia (against Marat Safin), Wimbledon (where it preserves its title vis-a-vis Andy Roddick) and with the US Open (where it makes a success of one of the best matches of its career vis-a-vis Lleyton Hewitt finally), Federer becomes the first player to carry out the Small slam since Mats Wilander in 1988. It also succeeds in granting the first world place in January and preserve throughout the year. Its defeat with the third turn of Roland Garros vis-a-vis Gustavo Kuerten will be the single against-performance of Switzerland. But its victory with the Masters vis-a-vis Lleyton Hewitt punctuates one year exceptional of 11 titles including 3 Masters Series and as many Large Slams.
2005
The year 2005 sees Roger Federer continuing to sit her domination on world tennis. In spite of two defeats in semi-final with the Open of Australia (vis-a-vis Marat Safin) and with Roland-Garros (vis-a-vis Rafael Nadal), it succeeds in being essential on Wimbledon for the third consecutive time (vis-a-vis Andy Roddick) and on the US Open (vis-a-vis Andre Agassi). It on the whole gains 11 tournaments (as in 2004) including 4 Masters Series and two Large Slams. It finishes the year with only 4 defeats (either 95,3% of victories) but inclines finally Masters Cup vis-a-vis David Nalbandian. This defeat puts an end to 24 consecutive victories finally.
2006
The year 2006 is to date the best season of Roger Federer. As in 2004, it makes the Small slam while being essential on the Open of Australia (against Márcos Baghdatís), on Wimbledon (against Rafael Nadal) and on the US Open (against Andy Roddick). Nevertheless, he arrives this year until finally of Roland Garros but inclines himself like the previous year vis-a-vis Rafael Nadal. Switzerland on the whole makes a success of an almost perfect year with 12 titles including 4 Masters Series and 4 finales (either only one defeat before the final in 17 tournaments). It finishes the year with 5 defeats, including 4 vis-a-vis Rafael Nadal, which is the only one to dispute the supremacy of Switzerland. A new victory with the Masters Cup vis-a-vis James Blake will punctuate this season when from many records fell (in particular the total of profits in tournaments over one season, the number of consecutive weeks in the first world place, the number of points ATP, the advance on the second with the classification, first player to carry out two Small slams in the era Open, first player to be gained more than 10 tournaments three consecutive years…) and where Federer was essential on the sides of largest in the history of tennis.
2007
The year 2007, although marked by some " passages to vide" , in many points with 2006 is in conformity. Indeed, once again Federer carries out the Small slam and gains the Open of Australia (vis-a-vis Fernando Gonzalez), the US Open (vis-a-vis Novak Djokovic) and Wimbledon for the fifth consecutive time, equalizing vis-a-vis Rafael Nadal the record of Bjorn Borg. Moreover, it once again inclines finally Roland Garros vis-a-vis Nadal, that is to say a series of 10 consecutive finales in Large Slam (a record). Nevertheless, two defeats vis-a-vis Guillermo Cañas at the beginning of year and David Nalbandian at the end of the season attract some criticisms in its connection. Over 16 tournaments in which it took part, it gains 8 titles (it on the whole is the first time that it gains " of it; also peu" since 2003) including 2 Masters Series (with Hamburg, where it gains its 4th title (record) and with Cincinnati) and reached 4 finales. Besides it finishes its season on a victory with the Masters Cup vis-a-vis David Ferrer, which cash puts a term at one year 9 defeats (either as much as those of 2005 and 2006 joined together) but where it will have known to concentrate on the significant events to gain its 10th, 11th and 12th Large Slams, approaching with great steps the record Pete Sampras (14 major tournaments).
Trainers
- 1989 - 1994: Seppli Kacovsky (Swiss). Kacovsky was the principal trainer of Old Boys' Tennis Club in the birthplace To federate: Basle. To federate joined Old Boys' at the eight years age.
- 1991 - 1995,1997-1998: Peter Casing (Australia). Casing gave weekly particular drives To federate, from 10 to 14 years. They were joined together in a new training service to Biel in 1997. Casing then involved Federer until it becomes professional.
- 1995 - 1997: After Federer had become World champion junior, it was selected to join the Swiss National center of tennis to Ecublens (Vaud), where it was formed until the end of his schooling.
- 1999 - 2003: Peter Lundgren (Sweden). When Federer entered the professional circuit, it chooses the former player Peter Lundgren, that it had met with Biel. He consulted it regularly when he was with Peter Carter.
- 2005 - 2007: Tony Roche (Australia). Rock is a former Australian champion of tennis which carried out Patrick Rafter and Ivan Lendl towards the place of n°1 world. It helped Federer a few weeks per annum, in particular before the Grands Slams and the Masters Series. The May 13rd 2007, Roger Federer and Tony Roche decided, by mutual agreement, not to collaborate more.
Characteristics of its play
Roger Federer plays of the right hand and practical a reverse with a hand, this last blow being relatively rare among the players of the circuit who prefer to him in very great majority the reverse with two hands. One can however note that the Pete Sampras American, with whom Federer is often compared, also carried out his reverse with a hand, thus accentuating temptations of comparison between the two champions. It has a very complete, effective play on all the surfaces including on beaten ground. It does not base its play on a precise technique and its characteristic is precisely to adapt its play according to that of its adversary to be able to carry out the best possible blow at a given time. At the beginning of its career (until 2003 approximately) it practiced a true play of attack, often making use of the service-flight, and it is in this way that it gained its first Wimbledon. However, with the advent of very good relanceurs (Rafael Nadal, David Nalbandian or David Ferrer for example), and the progressive deceleration of surfaces, it was obliged to diversify its play to gain another share that on grass. Thus it adopted this play very varied without true weak point. The great characteristics of its gestural are its fluidity and its relaxation, giving this singular impression that Federer " force" never. Indeed, its strike always are very slackened and it seems generally very slackened during the points. That enables him to carry out violent accelerations as well as unexpected blows in very delicate positions. Its leg movement, balanced, and its cover of the ground are exceptional and he is regarded as one of the most powerful players in the rate of travel. With the difference of the majority of the players who do many small steps while approaching the ball, as for example Jimmy Connors in its time did it, Federer taken great full steps. He can strike extremely in full race or moving back, which enables him to pass from a defensive position to a position of attack on a blow and to reverse badly committed points.
Here an analysis of its play point by point:
Service
It has a very simple gesture and fluid which enables him to give to the ball a mean velocity of approximately 210km/h on its first services, and 190km/h on its seconds (but with a effect more accentuated). It also manages to print with the ball an effect of important top spin, in particular in second service, which gives to the latter a consequent acceleration with the rebound and embarrassment thus the relancor who must of this fact of striking the ball with the top of the shoulder. The fact that its throw and its gesture are exactly the same ones for the various services that it realizes (in the center, on the side, top spin, slicé, on the player…) allows to surprise the adversary. He is generally regarded as one of the best waiters of the circuit. To federate seems never as powerful besides in this sector of the play as when it is in a delicate situation (balls of station-wagon or set for example). Nevertheless, on beaten Ground, the ball is slowed down by surface and its number of gaining services falls, thus limiting its margin of error in the other sectors of the play.
The right blow
Its right blow is generally regarded as its best blow. Indeed, this one is seldom taken failing this and often makes it possible Switzerland to conclude the exchange thanks to an acceleration. Its preparation is relatively short what enables him to rather early strike the ball after the rebound, a little with the manner of Andre Agassi. Also sometimes this blow enables him to find angles important, which then enable him to have the open court to conclude without too much from difficulty. Its first right blow (i.e. the first striking after having been useful) is particularly powerful when its first ball passes and allows him to gain many points with a certain facility. Nevertheless, when the exchange loses intensity somewhat, it sometimes happens to him to strike the ball with a certain nonchalance and of " boiser" (either to strike with the framework of the racket, and not with the rope) and thus to make not caused errors. It is in particular the case when the unfavourable ball has much effect and goes up very quickly after the rebound. David Foster Wallace described incredible speed, the fluidity and the rough force of this right blow as being " a large whip liquide" while John McEnroe indicated it as being " the greatest blow of our sport" on many occasions.
The reverse
There exists with tennis two types of different reverses: the reverse known as " slicé" , where the ball is rubbed from top to bottom in order to reduce the height of the rebound and to obstruct the adversary which must thus go up it, and the reverse " lifté" where contrary the ball is rubbed upwards so that it accelerates at the time of the rebound and that it takes the adversary speed. The top spin reverse To federate is probably the blow which progressed the most these last years. Previously, it was its weakest blow by far and it had much evil to use it to take the ascending one on its adversary. It thus made for example " shifts blow droit" in order to turn its reverse and to strike the ball in right blow, but that nevertheless remained a large weak point and certain adversaries, such as for example Rafael Nadal, played systematically on its reverse to push it with the fault. To the wire of time, however, this blow largely progressed and one can from now on say that without being its most effective blow, it is from now on stable and regular. The fact that it is with a hand makes it possible him to find angles impressive and to carry out very difficult blows whereas it is far from the ball. Besides Roger Federer has one of best the passings of reverse of the circuit. The fluidity with which it strikes its reverse gives an impression of facility in the execution of its blows which is certainly not foreign with the fact that Federer is regarded as having one of the most esthetic reverses to a hand of the circuit with Richard Gasquet. Its reverse is much better besides than that of Pete Sampras for example. Its reverse slicé as for him was always a weapon very much used by Switzerland. This blow is particularly made profitable by Switzerland on fast surface where it manages to give a very low rebound to the ball. That enables him to make changes of rate/rhythm to obstruct the adversary which is then obliged to give a high ball. This blow is also an option of which is used for the world number one to play very long and thus to start again a badly committed exchange. However, the slice cannot be really regarded as a blow of attack out of fast surfaces, and on beaten ground for example, this one has only little influence on the play, because the rebound remains relatively high all the same. Nevertheless, whatever the surface, the large strong point of its reverse is the facility with which he manages to alternate lengths, angles and effects to gain the point, although he does not have same ease nor the same regularity as with his right blow.
The flight
To federate was a long time assailing like its idols Stefan Edberg or Boris Becker. Nevertheless, because of the effectiveness of its basic play of short and of the total deceleration of surfaces, Federer ended up using to it service-flight more like one variation with its play that like a true tactic with whole share. Its good vision of the play makes that it knows at which time it must go up to the net and how: by overflow or fixing for example, and with all the variations which the effects and the lengths bring. Sometimes its reflexes, acquired during its youth where it went up very regularly to the net, enable him to return balls almost out of reach or very rapids. Nevertheless, of many amateurs of tennis, nostalgic of an increasingly rare play of attack on the professional circuit, would like to more often see it with the net, and to remain less " attentiste" bottom of short, so that its play is more spectacular. It should be noted that its recurring use of stolen of approach enables him to assemble against basic contreurs of runs such as David Ferrer, against which the first stolen one (generally realized on the level of the line of square of service) can with difficulty be sufficiently incisor to conclude the point directly. The rise with hitch, which it uses in a specific way, also enables him to vary its play and to gain points.
Physics
Thanks to its very slackened play and a good hygiene of life, Federer was generally saved by the wounds, gaining very long and intense matches sometimes, and this in spite of seasons long and testing for the organization. One can note besides that Federer forever declared fixed price at the time of a match on the Circuit ATP (its only fixed price going back to the circuit junior), which is almost single in modern tennis.
Mental
Whereas it had tendency to " before; balancer" matches at the time of meetings which it felt to escape to him, it acquired with the wire of time more serenity and shows from now on a certain impassibility on the court. Generally very calm, it sometimes happens to him all the same to express its frustration or its joy at certain times, but that remains rather rare. It has also a great capacity to manage the important points and matches enabling him to gain meetings without inevitably playing on its best level (its matches against Nikolaï Davydenko, inter alia, in which Federer " ensure the essentiel" in are rather representative). Other illustrations of its mental almost without fault at the time of the significant events are its series of 24 consecutive victories finally between 2003 and 2005 and of 15 Tie-break S gained consecutively in 2006 and 2007.

Personal records

Roger Federer established many records in the world of tennis. Most significant being the number of consecutive weeks that it holds in the first place of world classification, its three Small slams (in 2004, 2006 and 2007) or its 5 tournaments of consecutive Wimbledon that it gained between 2003 and 2007, equalizing Björn Borg. Its next challenges are to beat the record of 14 tournaments of the Grand Slam of Pete Sampras or to carry out the Grand Slam that Rod Laver is the last to have achieved in 1969.
The largest player of all times?
It is always very difficult to compare players who did not play at same time, and it would be vain to say that such or such is the best player of all times. At most can one try to make some quantified comparisons and to trust with the prize list of the various players of the era Open, although once again account would have to be held at the same time relative potential of each player (for example: what would have made Federer vis-a-vis Bill Tilden if the Suisse had been born 88 years earlier under the conditions from the time with rackets out of wooden, no knowledge in dietetics, no concept of biomechanics, no knowledge - or almost - in musculation, etc…? Or reciprocally that Tilden would have made if it had been born at the same time as Federer and thus would have benefitted from the current conditions to play?) but also of its longevity.
One can legitimately consider that Roger Federer appears, at the sides of Pete Sampras, Ivan Lendl, Björn Borg, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Rod Laver or Andre Agassi, among the restricted circle of the tennis players of legend. It would be absurd to want to appoint among these champions “the best tennis player of all times”, because they did not run at the same times and the circumstances of their careers are completely different. Moreover, the tournaments had more or less importance for the players according to the times and the material constantly evolved/moved. However, several criteria (on the level of the prize list thus) could be used to try to establish a classification among these various players of the era Open:
- the number of gained major tournaments (Large Slam but also Masters, Olympic Games and Masters Series),
- the number of weeks as a world number one (the most obvious criterion to perhaps classify the champions),
- the number of Large gained Slam (many observers use this criterion to classify the champions),
- or percentage by objectives carried out (i.e. among all the tournaments which a tennis player could gain according to his time).
Attempt at classification
Classification by major titles
Classification per world number of weeks n°1
Classification by titles of the Large Slam
Only the first eleven players having gained at least a tournament of the Grand Slam since the beginning of the era Open - since 1968 is - are taken into account.
Classification per percentage of objectives carried out
OA = Open of Australia; RG = Roland Garros; W = Wimbledon; US = US Open; M = Masters; OJ = Olympic Games; IW = Indian Wells; Mia = Miami; MC = Monte Carlo; R = Rome; H = Hamburg; Edge = Canada (Montreal or Toronto); Cin = Cincinnati; Europe = Masters Series of Europe; PB = Paris Bercy; To be n°1 = many weeks n°1; To finish n°1 = to finish the year as a number 1 world.
- Means that the tournament in question did not exist at the time of the player.
