Roger Estrange

Roger Estrange (1616 - 1704) is a writer and lampoonist English which defended with enthusiasm the royalist theses at the time of the First English revolution. In 1644, it carried out a conspiracy in favor of Charles Ier of England and was condemned to died for Espionnage. After four years of imprisonment to the Prison of Newgate, Estrange managed to escape and find refuge in Holland. In 1653, it obtained an amnesty of Oliver Cromwell.

In 1663, following the English Restoration, Roger Estrange started a career of journalist and published The Public Intelligencer . It continued to be implied in political controversies all the remainder of its life. In 1685, it was made knight by Jacques II. Later, this burning Tory, adversary of the religious tolerance, was stopped several times to be itself committed in conspiracies against Guillaume III.

In addition to writings lampoonists or journalistic, one owes him of many translations in English of the ancient Littérature, including the Fable S of Ésope.
