Roger Corman

Roger Corman, born the April 5th 1926 is an American scenario writer with whom one owes more than one about fifty films under realizer and more than one hundred under producer. Formidable denichor of talents, it launched good number of realizers now recognized like Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Francis Ford Coppola, Joe Dante, the critic Peter Bogdanovich or Jonathan Demme. He also diffused films of prestige (Truffaut, Fellini, Bergman…), a little contrary to its production.

Biography

Its achievements are to be classified in the Série B. Roger Corman had a simple principle: a very weak budget, a starvation wage, a subject with action and a rather great freedom provided that the budget is not exceeded. With final, the films were more or less bâclés (for lack of connections, microphones in the field…), realized in less than five days, even two. Nevertheless, one finds some real successes, like the Small Shop of the horrors , a horrific comedy with a very talkative carnivorous plant. It was tested with many kinds, the such film of gangster ( Machine Gun Kelly , with Charles Bronson as a killer truer than natural), one of his most successful films. But it is impassioning it cycle Edgar Poe, in a fantastic vein, which gave to Corman its noble letters, and contributed to its reputation in Europe. For the circumstance, it is surrounded by a team of faithful: the writer Richard Matheson, like Charles Beaumont and Charles Griffith are with the scenarios. Les stories is held in superb very coloured decorations of studio: haunted manors, fantastic landscapes, invaded marshes of fog, etc… The setting in scene is neater than usually, and Roger Corman, who has work for a certain cinema psychedelic ( The Trip ), affectionate the oneiric effects. The artistic result is splendid. the Fall of the house Usher inaugurates the cycle, the mask of red death , the empire of terror are splendid and return the atmosphere of Poe perfectly. The masterpiece is incontestably the corbel . The original poem is transformed into a burlesque comedy, with Price, Karloff, Lorre and the young person Jack Nicholson, and is completed by a duel of sorcery. A visual fireworks. Inspired by Lovecraft, the Curse of Arkham , with a poem of Poe in opening and final, is a success. These films have a certain analogy with the productions Hammer (Terence Fisher), but with a taste pronounced for the theatrical one and a setting in scene almost expressionnist.

The cycle Edgar Poe had a notable influence on Tim Burton, in particular on Sleepy Hollow fantastic and its decorations. Tim Burton is besides a large fan of the actor Vincent Price.
