Roger Cayrel
Roger Victor Emile Cayrel (born the December 4th 1925 with Bordeaux) is a Astronome French. Its main subjects of study are the stellar atmospheres, the chemical evolution of the galaxies and the stars with weak Métallicité.
He attended the Lycée Michel-Montaigne in Bordeaux and studied physics with the national university and the Faculty of Science of Paris.
In addition to its scientific work, it occupied several important stations in the management of sciences: director of the Observatory Canada-France-Hawaii (CFHT, 1974-1980), president of the commission of UAI on the stellar atmospheres (1973-1976) and director of the Office of longitudes (1995-1996).
Cayrel is member corresponding of the Academy of Science since 1988.
Cayrel and its colleagues measured for the first time simultaneously lines of Thorium and Uranium in star of the halation extremely low in metals bps CS31082-0001, which was baptized star of Cayrel in its honor. This simultaneous measurement made it possible to date star by using a methodology extremely similar to that used for the Carbon dating thus allowing a determination from the age of the star, which was estimated at 12,5 billion more or less 3 billion years.
Since 1954, he is married with the astronomer Giusa de Strobel.
