Rodolphe III of Burgundy

Rodolphe III of Burgundy , known as the Piles or Lazy the , (born in 970 - died the September 6th 1032) was the last king de Bourgogne.

Biography

Rodolphe III was the son of the king de Bourgogne Conrad III known as '' the Pacific '' (925 - 993) and of Mathilde de France (943 - 980), girl of the King de France Louis IV known as '' of Overseas ''.

In 993, Rodolphe III succeeds his/her father Conrad III. It is presented by the historians, like a weak man, courage lack. The archbishop of Lyon - since 979 - Burchard II, wire bastard of Conrad the Pacific, furrowed the kingdom to guarantee the capacities of his/her royal half-brother. Under its reign, the supervision of the Germanic royalty was done even heavier and ends up choking the authority of kings de Bourgogne.

The sovereigns ottoniens started to intervene directly in the Burgundian kingdom. Rodolphe had to subdue in 999 a revolt of the large lords of the kingdom. The Adélaïde empress came thus in the kingdom from Burgundy, where she arbitrated the different ones supremely which had opposed Rodolphe III to its aristocracy.

After the year millet, the king lost the practice to join together in Concile S the Burgundian bishop S. From now on, the Rhone-native prelates took the way of the Germanie, as did it the archbishops of Lyon and Tarentaise and the bishops of Geneva and Lausanne in 1007, when they went to attend the Concile of Frankfurt. Benefitting from the weakening of the royalty, the bishops could manage their dioceses in all independence.

Thereafter, to reconcile the support of the clergy against the noble ones, it made several important donations with the bishops of Basle, Sion and Lausanne. This last, it yielded in 1011 the “county of Vaud”, i.e. the load of count and the Regality (public Droits exerted originally by the king) on the roads, tolls, the forests, the currency, the markets, measurements, water, the criminals, in the territory of the county. The February 15th 1018, at the request of its familiar, Rodolphe III, gives or rather returns to the Abbaye of Saint-Maurice d' Agaune the Fisc S of Sciex (?), of Lully, of Commugny, half of Pully, Oron, pauté of Vuadens, Bouloz, the plaid of Vevey, Lutry, Vouvry, Ollon, Villy, Naters, some rights to Saint-Maurice and the whole of the mountain pastures of the Chablais.

In 1011, Rodolphe III married Hermengarde, a relationship so close to the future count de Savoie Humbert Ier '' with the White Hands '' (980 - 1048), which it is probable that it was the sister, according to an assumption often defended by the Italian historians. Rodolphe III gave to his wife a considerable douaire, which extended in particular around Aix-the-Baths and from the combe of Savoy. Well quickly, these royal grounds passed to the hands of the count Humbert to the White Hands. The king liked to reside and to take water with Aix-the-Baths and it was made there build a vast palate. At the time a Roman temple dedicated to Mercure was still upright beside the palate.

To Strasbourg, in 1016, Rodolphe lent a homage of hand to its nephew the Germanic Empereur Henri II, recognizing it like guard and heir. The king of Burgundy promised with the emperor to control according to his councils and to leave him his succession if it were to die without leaving a legitimate son. But this tender was not accepted by large kingdom, and - under the impulse of the count Otte-Guillaume - all the cities of the Comté of Burgundy closed their doors with the emperor.

In 1018, Rodolphe renewed and supplemented the commitments which it had undertaken in Strasbourg, and consequently behaved into true Vassal of the emperor while giving to him in free provision the strongholds held by the count of Besancon, Otte-Guillaume, and while being made invest by him its crown and of its sceptre. The Burgundian royalty from now on was completely subjected to the imperial capacity.

Hugues, wire of Rodolphe is promoted with the évêché of Lausanne in 1019.

Rodolphe III concedes the Comté of Vienna with the archbishop of Vienna in 1023.

With died of Henri II, in 1024, Rodolphe III is constrained by the noble ones of Burgundy, to revoke its made donation before eight years.

However, in 1025, it is seen constrained to renew its initial engagement, with respect to the new king de Germanie Conrad II Salic the, the husband of its Gisele niece, girl of her Gerberge sister, and who occupies Basle to make pressure on him.

In 1027, Conrad II is crowned Germanic emperor, Rodolphe attends the ceremony and confirms the succession.

In June 1032, Burchard II, wire bastard of Conrad the Pacific succeeds his/her uncle on the Archevêché of Lyon. He repudiates the succession on the kingdom and made party of revolted. In September, with died of Rodolphe III, the fight begins between the emperor Conrad II and the other nephew of Rodolphe III, the count de Blois and of Troyes Eudes II, the most direct heir to Rodolphe.
