Rocket Rods

Rocket Rods was an attraction of new the Tomorrowland (1998) of Disneyland to Anaheim in California. It was to be the nail of the new concept and joined again with the principles stated by Walt Disney but it did not reach that point and due being closed for many reasons.

Attraction

Rocket Rods opened on May 22nd, 1998 like one of new the elements of the New Tomorrowland of Disneyland. This attraction at high speed traversed the way of old the PeopleMover . The passengers entered attraction by the building at the entry of Tomorrowland which accommodated previously attraction Circle-Vision 360° .

Detail of the course

In the first room, broad diagrams of attractions last and present ( at the time ) of Tomorrowland were hung on the walls like their vehicles. One could see there: a car of PeopleMover , a rocket of Rocket Jets , another of Space Mountain and before model Mark III of the Monorail Disneyland. After the drafts of the “posters publictiaires” are placarded with the wall asking the prolongation of attraction until the Aéroport John Wayne and other destinations of the neighborhoods.

The following room was a rotunda, that one even which accommodated the 9 screens of the theater Circle-Vision 360°. It presented extracts of films on transport of which America the Beautiful , evolution of the vehicles of General Motors on an electronic version of the success of Steppenwolf, Born to Be Wild . The visitors continued by a tunnel to lead to the elevated station of Rocket Rods in the center of Tomorrowland.

The visitors got then into vehicles of five places longitudinally to a starting zone of race. Then a fire passed from the red to the yellow then to the green what marked the departure in waterspout to the entry of the country. The circuit turned then towards the south and the building of Star Turns which it crossed in the safe black at one time when a collision seemed to have to occur with sharp pace: a simple mirror was laid out along a tight turn. The race continued in Space Mountain, offering a very short vision of attraction. The rocket left the building then but to cross the Carousel Theater , which lodges Innoventions. The circuit took a semicircular layout in order to marry the shape of the carousel before arising and to curve above the course of attraction Autopia and the lagoon of Submarine Voyage. It skirted then the station of the Disneyland Monorail before joining the building hébrergenat the queue of Rocket Rods. The rocket returned then in center of the country to the station.

Various music and information

Attraction included/understood a clean musical topic baptized “Magic Highways” and composed by the Frères Sherman. It was diffused in the queue and the exit of attraction. Another song was an instrumental version of the Born To Be Wild of the group Steppenwolf, arranged by Steve Bartek of Oingo Boingo.

Rocket Rods was the first Disney attraction to propose to a queue “simple visitor” because of the duration of waiting of low capacities of the vehicles.

The fall and the rejection of Rocket Rods

Rocket Rods closed in September 2000 for a restoration which was to finish in spring 2001 but no work was never observed on attraction. In April 2001, the Los Angeles Times and The Orange County Register published articles announcing that attraction would never reopen. The direction of Disneyland did not contradict their remarks.

There were several reasons to close Rocket Rods.

  • attraction traversed the 16 minute old circuit of PeopleMover in only 3 minutes.
  • Because of the budgetary restrictions the course was not furnished with slide or rise in the curves. The vehicles were to thus brake quickly to turn. The budget would have Pu higher being if a sponsor had been found but it were not the case.
  • abrupt accelerations/decelerations regularly caused failures of the embarked computing system what blocked the remainder of attraction completely.
  • the technical stops of attraction were at least daily and created queues 3 a.m. (for 3 minutes of course)
  • In reasons of these many problems, the park regularly distributed passports to be able to make attraction another day.
  • attraction became very unpopular and stigmatized the visitors who to wait had often only shops or restaurants to be visited when they were not only simple travelling merchants who pullulated in the park under the directives of Paul Pressler.

End of a project

Rocket Rods were withdrawn and destroyed after closing. Only one survived and was placed in front of the restaurant Hollywood & Dine with Disney' S California Adventure, but it did not remain there a long time. Perhaps it disappeared in 2002 for the files from Walt Disney Imagineering.

After the closing of Rocket Rods, the hopes to re-examine PeopleMover re-appeared and the rumor always circulates. It specifies that PeopleMover would return in the shape of a copy of the always active version to the Magic Kingdom: the Tomorrowland Transit Authority. But the equipment for PeopleMover does not exist any more that in certain places of the way and should thus be rebuilt to be to reinstall. It is as possible as the concrete way is completely removed “to clear up” the sky of Tomorrowland.

Al Lutz, the author of a site of fans on Disney, announced that Disney would have envisaged to restore PeopleMover and Rocket Jets . However even if some acknowledge that the return of PeopleMover is “inevitable” it is not very probable that Disney replaces the Astro Orbitor current by an updated version of traditional the Rocket Jets .

The queue of Rocket Rods which was before the cinema Circle-Vision 360° was transformed into Buzz Lightyear' S Astro Blasters, which opened in March 2005. In spite of the practice at Disney which new attractions return homage by certain details to their elder, no trâce could be found evoking Rockets Rods in the attraction devoted to Buzz the flash.
