Rockefeller museum

The Musée Rockefeller is a museum of history located vis-a-vis the walls of the Old city of Jerusalem, and shelters many vestiges discovered in Israel and more particularly with Jerusalem.

History of the building

The Rockefeller Museum is built thanks to the gifts of the American patron John-David Rockefeller Jr, which gives him its name. Its building is regarded as one of most beautiful of Jerusalem. The architect is the director of public works of the capacity British agent. The first stone is posed on June 19th 1930, and the inauguration takes place on January 13rd 1938. The Museum then becomes the official museum of the British mandate, and shelters moreover the section agent with antiquities. At the conclusion of the War of Independence, it remains on the territory Jordan N and is managed by a scientific advice. In 1967, following the War the Six Day old, the Rockefeller Museum becomes a branch of the Musée of Israel.

The Museum today

The Rockefeller Museum shelters today the office of antiquities for the section of Jerusalem and a library containing of many document concerning to the archaeological discoveries in Israel of the time of the British mandate at our days. Two workshops are open there; one specialized out of ceramics, the second in the cleaning of the coins.

The vestiges were found in various areas of the country of which the Samarie, Beït-Shéan, Lakhish, Such Beït-Marsim, Ashkelon. The Museum shelters inter alia vestiges of the prehistoric time, a collection of seals dating from the time of the First Temple, of the gold jewels discovered with Such-Aladjoul and Beït-Shemesh, of the ivory ustensils of Megiddo and of the manuscripts of Lakhish.
