Rockabilly
The Rockabilly (is written also " Rock'n'roll-HAVe-Billy") or Hillbilly Rock is in an original manner a form of American musical expression which was born in the first half of the Fifties and which can be summarized in the following terms borrowed from Michel Rose: “Kind of Rock'n'roll' white Roll, typically Southerner and rural, born in Memphis in 1954. On the one hand influenced by the ancestral shapes of country musics & Western then called Hillbilly, and the black Blues as well as the northerner Rock' roll of Bill Halley. ”
The rockabilly is a mixture of Rock, of Blues, " gospel" and of hillbilly music . The “hillbilly music” ( hillbilly is an American term meaning “country bumpkin”, “bumpkin” or “idiot”, used pejoratively to appoint the farmers of the mountains of the south of the United States), is a manner of qualifying the traditional rural music American, played to dance.
A group of rockabilly generally includes/understands a singer, a electric Guitare, a battery (often reduced to a clear Caisse and a Cymbale), and a Contrebasse played in Pizzicato. The words often refer to the cars or the female relations. The artists of the revival of the rockabilly tend to adopt a clothing and a scenic attitude characteristics: hairstyle “banana”, leather jackets black, etc
Launched by Elvis Presley with her individual That' S All Right Mama (produced by Sun Records) in 1954 which saw n°1 in the United States 50 years after (billboard source); The rockabilly is in the beginning the work of small labels independent such as Sun Records (label of the producer Sam Phillip). Sam Phillips started by recording artists of blues such as B B King or Howlin' Wolf. It is after the success of Elvis that it starts to record other singers of Rockabilly we can quote Carl Perkins (Blue Sweden shoes, Honey Don' T, Baby trying to Be my baby, Your true coils…); Roy Orbison (Rockhouse, Ooby dooby, Domino, Problem child…); Warren Smith (Ubangui stomp, Uranium rock'n'roll…); Billy Lee Riley (Flying saucers rock'n'roll roll, Red hot…), Jack Earls (Let' S bop.), The singer Barbarra Pittman (I need has man…), then singers of Rock'n'roll roll like Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Mann and Charlie Rich. Other labels also marked the history of the rockabilly like Météor and King with the exeptionnels recordings of Charlie Feathers (One hand loose…) and Mac Curtis (Grandaddys Rockin…), Starday records with Benny Joy (Crash landing the Party…) Sony Fisher (Rockin Daddy…) George Jones (White lightning, Rock'n'roll it…) There were also majors as CBS who knew to record artists of great talent like Sid King and five string (I like it…), Johnny Horton (Honky tonk man,…), Ersel Hickey (Goin' down that road…) the Hakes kids (Rockaway rock'n'roll, Hot Rod…) and especially the savage Ronnie Self-service (Bop has lena…), Mgm with Andy Starr (Rockin, rollin' stone…) Marvin Rainwater (Roving rambler…) and Decca and Brunswick records with first faces (rockabilly) of Buddy Holly (Rockin' around with olie vee, Blue days black nights… before it makes only rock'n'roll roll), Johnny Carroll and the Hot rock'n'rolls (Crazy crazy lovin', Hot rock'n'roll…) Roy Hall (Diggin' that boogy…) Terry Noland (Ten little women, Hypnotized…) and especially legendary recordings of the trio rock'n'roll roll of Johnny Burnette (Tear it up, Rockabilly boogy, You' Re undecided, Lonesome train, Train kept has rollin', baby babe). Certain labels specialized in the blues and rhythm and blues also have had artists of rockabilly of large talents Chess Records with Dale Hawkins (Suzie Q, Tornado, Little Pig…) Rusty York (Sugaree…) and Bobby Sisco (Go go go…). Rockabilly is a term often galvaudé employed wrongly and through indicating the rock'n'roll of the years 1950, but it is about a very precise musical style which he is some times difficult to distinguish compared to work from certain singers from white rock'n'roll roll like Jack Scott or Gene Summers.
Bill Halley launched the rock' roll in particular with titles like Rock this joint (1951), crazy man crazy , n°12 in the United States in 1952, and especially Gock around the clock recorded in 1954 and popularized in 1955 with film “Graine of violence”; moreover, the title was n°1 in the United States and in Great Britain, but it is true that Elvis returned this style of famous music in the world while being the principal vector about it.
This musical genre quickly evolved to other forms of rock'n'roll to disappear almost completely since 1958.
The rockabilly had a renewal of popularity in the Seventies with the label of Californian Ronnie Weiser Rollin' rock'n'roll, which made re-record geniuses of the style like Ray Campi (Play cool it…) Johnny Carroll or Mac Curtis, one also owes him two LPs of great quality of a Californian group Ravenna and the Magnetics, but also into Large bertagne with the music of the teddy servant boys which adapted the American rockabilly years 1950 with groups like Crazy Cavan and the Rhythm rockers (Teddy Jive, Trouble, My little sisters gotta motorbike and Teddy servant boy boogy…) Riot Rockers, Little tina and Flight 56, Matchbox (Rockabilly rebels…, and the Jets (James dean….). The Years 1980 with groups like the Stray Cats, Blue Cats, Polecats or Blasters and which was at the origin of a revival rockabilly, prepared by the English groups previously named, but also by the group New Yorkais The Cramps which took again many titles of rockabilly repertory of Charlie Feathers, Ronnie Dawson or Whithey Pullen. In France, let us quote for examples the groups of the label of Jackie Chalard the Alligators Jezebel Rock, TeenKat' S, Victor Leed and Chris Evans and that of the label of Jerry Dixie (the SAVAS) with the Rock'n'roll roll gang, Texas Pharaoes, Gene Everett, and Boppin' Cats. The Nineties will be also important for the style with groups as varied as Wildfire Willie and the ramblers, Oakie Dookies, Tin star trio, or The Avengers. End of the year 90 and the beginning of the year 2000 will be a return to the authentic sound with the recordings of groups on the labels like Tail records and Lenox records, quote French Don Cavalli and the two timers, German Spo dee O dee, but as Spanish Tennesse servant boys and the savages Hi winders (though more white rock'n'roll as Rockabilly), Ervin Travis recognized today by all the rockabilly medium.
On this subject, in France, it is inter alia possible to refer to the following works:
- Herzaft, Gerald, 1984, " Country Music" , What I Know No 2134, P.U.F., Paris, to forget a pseudo-specialist very quickly
- Rose, Michel, 1986, “the encyclopedia of Country and Rockabilly”, ED. Jacques Grancher (already referred to above)
- Rose, Michel, 1981, “Pioneers of Rock' Roll" , Albin Michel/ROCK & FOLK, Paris

Herzhaft, like is not mentioned higher, a pseudo specialist but an excellent expert of the North-American popular musics. Its guide contains a very good article on the rockabilly and of interesting references discographics.

Psychobilly
At the end of the Years 1970, the The Meteors invent the Psychobilly - kind of rockabilly survitaminé which dissociates rockabilly in particular by its cinematographic approach (words in connection with films of series Z where the maniacs have the good share). This group involved behind him plethora of groups of psychobilly (such as Guana Batz, Demented Are Go!, Krewmen, Nekromantix, Mad Sin have not to forget groups like the sharks, the quakes or in the hexagon, the Banane metalik…) and the great hours of the London club the Klub Foot made.
