Rock of Combe
Roc of Combe is a prehistoric site which is on the commune of Payrignac, in the Lot.
He was excavated by F. Border and J. Labrot in 1966 and 1967.
According to F. Border, the stratigraphic sequence comprised on the basis of the base of the Moustérien, the Châtelperronien, the Aurignacien then again of the Châtelperronien and the Aurignacien, and finally of the Gravettien. For a long time, the stratigraphy of the site was regarded as a proof of the contemporaneity of Châtelperronien and Aurignacien, with what that implies knowing that the first facies is allotted to the Homme of Néandertal and the second with the anatomically modern Humains .
However the recent studies showed that supposed interstratifications resulted from rehandlings post-dépositionnels or of problems of reading of stratigraphy. Nothing makes it possible to say at present that the modern Néandertaliens and men côtoyés themselves or attended directly.
