Rochemelon

Rochemelon (or Rock Melon , Italian: Rocciamelone ) is a top of the the Italian Alps (3538 meters) located in the Province of Turin in Piedmont, not far from the French border , in the solid mass of the the grées Alps.

Bonifacius Rotarius (of Silk) makes of it the first rise on September 1st 1358, to deposit there a representation of the Virgin as a sign of gratitude to have survived its captivity in Holy Land during the Croisades. This exploit constitutes the oldest record recorded for a mountainous rise.

The top of Rochemelon dominates directly the town of Suse of more than 3000 meters of uneven. Its easy access since the valley, and in particular its proximity of Turin (an about sixty kilometers), as well as the panorama which the top with its remarkable altitude offers do one of them the most attended of of the Western Alps.

The pilgrimage of Rochemelon is a tradition each year, the August 5th. A statue of 3 meters of the Virgin Mary was high at the top in 1889.

To note that the border practically passes to a kilometer to the North-West of the top, this last being located apart from the watershed and thus entirely in Italian territory. This one passes indeed at the top of the Point of Novalèse (3358 meters), since which extends, on the French side, the glacier of Rochemelon (this one, in strong regression, goes down roughly until altitude 2900 meters).
