Roch the Room

Roch the Room (Saint-Paul, August 6th, 1929 - Joliette, August 20th, 2007), is a Politician Québécois. He was minister in the Canadian governments of Joe Clark and Brian Mulroney in addition to occupying the station the chief of the National union to the Québécois general election of 1981.

Seventh of a family of 10 children, it leaves its studies at the 14 years age. He initially works like to stop, then becomes representing sales with the use of a distributer of tobacco, cigarettes and confectioneries. He occupies then a station of manager of the sales which he will preserve until his election in 1968. Elected official city council man of Crabtree at 27 years, he becomes about it the mayor two years later, becoming the youngest mayor of Canada. Its mandate with the town hall will last of 1957 to 1965.

After having undergone an initial reverse in 1965, it is elected appointed with the House of Commons of Canada in the district Joliette as a progressist-conservative in 1968. It was a long time one of the only representatives of its party to be made elect in Quebec.

In 1971, it leaves this party when Robert Stanfield refusal to recognize the constitutional notion of the two nations founders of the country and the right to self-determination of Quebec. He is re-elected as independent in 1972, with the support of the organization of the Parti Québécois, but returns in the preserving bosom at the time of the federal election of 1974.

In 1979, it is one of the two only deputies progressist-conservatives elected in Quebec under the direction of Joe Clark. It was used as minister of the Provisioning and the Services in the short minority government as Clark. In 1980, he was the only Québécois deputy of the PC to being re-elected.

He resigns of his seat in March 1981 in order to take the direction of the National union and to try his chance in provincial policy. The party does not gain any seat with the election of 1981 and the Room arrives third in Berthier, the district close to that of Joliette, in order to leave the free track to his/her old friend, the deputy and minister pequist Guy Chevrette. It moreover treated the Minister for Finance of the time, Jean Chrétien, of liar in 1978, which will be worth to him to be expelled of the House of Commons.

When the progressist-conservatives take again the capacity with at their head Brian Mulroney, with the Canadian federal election of 1984, the Room becomes public Minister for Labor, before being retrogressed at the post of minister of State in June 1986. It leaves the Council of Ministers in February 1987 because of allegations of favoritism and a festival with 5000 $ cover where he was the guest of honor. He denied any implication but decided to put a term at his political career with the election of 1988. No charge of embezzlement was carried against Mr. the Room.
