Latin and Italian Paul Manuce , known as Paolo Manuzio Paulus Manutius (1512 - 1574), is a Venetian Imprimeur .
His/her father Alde Old the and, deserves to him in any connection to occupy the first place as printers.
Filled of an enthusiastic admiration for the literary masterpieces of the ancient Greece and the ancient Rome, they sacrificed their reputation and their fortune to devote their whole life to draw the old writers from chaos where eight centuries of cruelty had plunged them. Nonglad to tear off their works with the destruction, they wanted to return them of a universal access, and endeavoured to reproduce them in forms which, making their acquisition less expensive, put them at the range of a very great number of readers.
To compete with the editions bâloises, Paul Manuce asked the scholar urbinate Federico Commandino to revise:
- the edition Grynæus of the Greek text of the Planisphæra of Ptolémée (1538),
- and works of Archimedes compiled at Herwagen by the humanistic Thomas Gechauff (1544).
These translations, with those, contemporary, of Niccolo Tartaglia (for Archimedes and Jordanus de Nemore), mark truly the rebirth of mathematics in the Italian peninsula.
His/her son Alde the Young person continued his work.
