Robertsau

The Robertsau is the most septentrional district of Strasbourg, primarily residential.

It is delimited in the west by the Ill, in north by the drill of Robertsau, in the east by the the Rhine and in the south by the Canal of the Marne in the Rhine. The districts of Strasbourg joint are the Wacken and the European district, the Neustadt and the Île with the Ears. In the west the communes of Hoenheim, Bischheim and Schiltigheim are.

A certain Robert Bock built there a castle in the neighborhoods of the year 1200.

A advanced fort called Extremely-Louis was built by Vauban on an island forming Robertsau. This fort was intended for the defense of the town of Strasbourg the day before the war of the league of Augsburg.

The site was initially crossed by many arms of the Island and the Rhine and was occupied by part of the Rhenish forest, which remains today in the north of the district. Its frequent floods involved a late appearance of the urbanization, during the 19th century. It was the fact of market-gardeners, whose exploitations were gradually replaced by a perennial habitat and little by little by holidays Strasbourgeois rich person. The current population of the district is characterized by incomes higher than the average of the city, except for a social city (the city of the Island), built in the Années 1960 in its western fringe.

Its insulation, its green character and its reputation of easy district are at the origin of its attractivity and supported the recent development of the district. This strong land pressure encounters several constraints however, to start with the innondability of the site, whether it is by increase of tablecloth or immersion. The rare not-easily flooded grounds available are in addition struck restrictions, even of prohibition of urbanization, because of proximity of industriello-harbor installations in the east (the port with oils) and their perimeters Seveso and of Boil over. Moreover, the weak accessibility of the district (few bridges crossing its natural borders and an absence of public transport in Exclusive right of way) force to control the development of the district to limit the saturation of its network.

Lastly, the recent thickening of the district had as a corollary the weakening of its patrimonial and urban characteristics, because of progressive disappearance of the market-gardeners and certain villas and vernacular houses with the profit of more banal constructions, even in certain cases, of private housing estates during the years 1980 and 1990 (district of the Rebirth).

The most remarkable monument of Robertsau is the Château of Pourtalès with its large park of style English Jardin.

As from November 2007, Robertsau is connected to the downtown area by the line of tram E.
