The flag of the Finland , called Siniristilippu (the Flag with the Blue Cross), date of 1918 and is based on the model of the Drapeau of Denmark. It represents Scandinavian Croix blue on a white zone. Blue symbolizes the lakes and the sky while the white symbolizes the snow and the white nights of the Finnish summer. The ensign of State includes/understands in his center the weapons of Finland, it is in addition the exact one retorts civil flag. The flag in wings of swallow is used by the soldiers. The presidential flag is identical to that of the army but it carries also the Cross of Freedom in the left higher corner since the President of Finland is the Large Master about the Cross of Freedom.
History
The current drawing for the first time was used by the Nyland Yacht Club, founded with Helsinki in 1861. In addition to the blue cross on a white zone, the yacht club had added the crowned weapons of the province of Uusimaa like two lines crossed in the left higher corner. This flag is identical to that of the Yacht Club of founded Petersbourg Saint the previous year, except the position of the cross. The drawing can make think of the sign Russian Navy which had a Croix of saint André on a white zone.
Shortly after the independence of Finland in 1917, was held a competition for the drawing of the Finnish flag. Several proposals were submitted. With regard to the colors, the drawings fall mainly into two categories: one using the red and the yellow of the weapons of Finland, and the other composing with blue and the white.
A proposal comprised the shape of the Danish flag, but with a yellow cross on a red bottom. Another had diagonal bands blue and white but it was décrié like being appropriate more for one hairdresser that with a lately independent country.

According to the Finnish law, the proportions of the flag are 11:18 (height: width). The military ensign is of a unit longer and the tails are long of five units. The width of the top of the blue cross is of three units. When the flag floats on a pylon, the law recommends that the width is equal to a sixth height of the pylon.

The red and the yellow are used for the weapons which appear on the ensign of State. The colors in PMS are specified in Government Decision 827/1993 (in Finnish).
Other rules
The Finnish law prohibited to damage the flag or to use it in a disrespectful way. It is also illegal to remove the flag of a pylon without permission. That which transgresses these rules exposes to continuations to have dishonoured the flag.The Finnish law also prohibited the use of the presidential flag or the sign of State without permission, as well as the addition of additional symbols on the flag. One cannot sell a flag which has colors or a geometry different from that defined by the law.
The Finnish law specifies that the flag should not be dirty or damaged. When the flag is washed, it must be dried inside. Moreover, the habit wants that if it occurred that the flag touches the ground, it should immediately be flaring. It cannot be buried nor to be thrown with the sea.
