Roberto Assagioli

Roberto Assagioli (Venice 1888 - August 23rd, 1974) is a doctor neuropsychiatrist and pioneer of the Italian Psychanalyse. At the beginning disciple of Freud, it separated from the Master to develop his own approach of the Psychothérapie, which it called the Psychosynthèse.

Roberto Assagioli was born on February 27th, 1888 in an easy Jewish family from Venice. It accepted a good traditional culture and, thanks to stays abroad, it learned how to usually speak seven languages. Doctor Roberto Assagioli obtained his diplomas of the University of Florence. He specialized in neurology and psychiatry in Zurich while continuing studies of psychology and philosophy. In Zurich, in 1909, it became acquainted with Carl Gustav Jung, which was still close to Freud at that time. Like thesis of doctorate in psychiatry, Assagioli made a “critical study of the psychoanalysis”. It is about this time that he heard of the concept of psychosynthèse, advanced by a Swiss psychiatrist named Doumeng Bezzola, which circulated in the medium of the psychoanalysis - concept in which it will be interested in the point to devote his life to it.

Assagioli was sensitized very early with the spiritual questions, since his/her mother was interested in the theosophy, a mystico-esoteric thought rested by Mrs. Blavatsky, very popular in the middle-class of the time. It was also militant pacifist during the Second world war, which does not have more with Mussolini. It is told that it would have made profitable its imprisonment which was followed from there to try out and refine unquestionable method of self-knowledge, like the writing and the meditation.

After having explored and practisehaving practiced various methods of psychotherapy, it developed a new way which it called Psychosynthèse and founded with Rome, in 1926, the Institute of psychosynthèse.

One can attach Assagioli to a current which passes by Sigmund Freud, Carl Gustav Jung and Abraham Maslow, that it knew personally.

The psychosynthèse regards the human being as a whole and grants to each dimension the importance which returns to him, it aims at putting the man harmonizes some with itself and the world. It is classified as a transpersonnelle Psychologie because beyond the conscious Me it poses the existence of one oneself higher or transpersonnel.
