Robertiens

The family of the Robertiens is a family of the franque Noblesse which draws its name from the first name that carried a majority of her members. Three family members reached the throne: Eudes, his/her brother Robert Ier, and the grandson of this last Hugues Capet. The descendants of this last are named Capétiens.

The origin of the family remained ignored a long time. One a long time believed them downward of Childebrand, but this theory is now abandoned. Recent work released a certain number of assumptions and quasi-certainty on the family before Robert the Fort.

The noble ones of Thérouanne (assumption)

From an unknown father, probably noble from Thérouanne, were born three brothers:

  • Robert , chief clerk in 630, mayor of the palate of Neustrie in 654
  • Aldebert , which was monk
  • Erlebert , who was the father of Saint-Lambert , second abbot of Fontenelle, then bishop of Lyon in 678.

This first Robert can be identified with a Robert, duke of Alamans into 632.

A second Robert is quoted between 654 and 677 like duke in Neustrie and Count Palatine of the king Clotaire III. He would be wire of Erlebert.

He married Théodrade, and had:

  • Ragnobert , shown plot against Ebroïn, mayor of palate, and carried out into 678.
  • Angadrisma , married to Ansbert, third abbot of Fontenelle and bishop of Rouen from 684 to 692.
It would have also had:
  • Lambert, 8e bishop of Liege, 669 to 705.
  • Folchaide, married to Théodon II, duke agilolfinge of Bavaria († 716)

With the following generation, one knows several robertiens which would be grandson of the duke neustrien Robert:

  • Herve , count de Laon
  • Lambert , count in Hesbaye
  • Robert , bishop of Worms in 715
  • Roger , duke of Mans

Several bishops probably form part of these first Robertiens:

  • Robert, 32e bishop of Turns, 660 to 695.
  • Holy Rupert of Salzburg, alive in 699, evangelist of Bavaria, and privileged host of Théodon II, duke of Bavaria, and Folchaide.

The counts de Laon (assumption)

Herve or Hariveus is quoted like count de Laon between 680 and 692. He dies between this second date and 696. According to the very last assumptions, he would have married Irmina, a girl of Hugobert and would have had three children:
  • Rolande , married to Guy, abbot of Fontenelle, and ancestor of the Widonides
  • Théodrade , married to Heden de Thuringe and mother of Irmina, abess of Wurzbourg in 751
  • an anonymous son, married to Bertrade old the and father of Caribert de Laon and grandfather of Bertrade de Laon , woman of Pip the Brief.

Counts of Mans (assumption)

Roger appears as count of Mans into 710. With died from Herlemond, bishop of Mans, into 724 Roger benefits from the holidays of the episcopal see to manage the episcopal fields. It had three children:
  • Herve , count of Mans following his father
  • Gauziolène , bishop of Mans, and carried out to it a life of large lord
  • Rotilde , abbess

It is possible that both families of counts of Maine (the Rorgonides and the Hugonide S) are two branches resulting from the count Roger.

The counts de Hesbaye and of Wormsgau (quasi-certainty)

Lambert , count in Hesbaye, listed in 706 and died into 714, had at least three children:

  • ''' Rotrude ''' (v. 695 † 724), married to Charles Martel
  • Robert Ier , count de Hesbaye and perhaps of Worms, died before 764.
  • Landrada , married to Sigramn, count, and mother of Holy Chrodegand

Robert Ier , count de Hesbaye in 732, count in Oberheingau and Wormsgau, missus in Italy in 741 and Count Palatine in 757, died into 764, married towards 730 Williswinthe, girl of the count Adalelm and had as children:

  • Ingramn , father of the empress Ermengarde , married to Louis Ier the Piles
  • Cancor , count
  • Thurimbert (v.740, † a. 770), count de Hesbaye.

Thurimbert , count de Hesbaye and of Wormsgau, was the father of Robert II , count de Hesbaye and of Wormsgau, which had itself:

  • Robert III , count de Hesbaye and of Wormsgau, died into 834.

Robert III , count de Hesbaye and of Wormsgau, married Waldrade, girl of the count Adrien, therefore niece of Hildegarde, woman of Charlemagne, sister of Eudes of Orleans and aunt of Ermentrude of Orleans, woman of Charles the Bald person. Of this marriage, they had:

  • quasi-certainement Robert the Fort († 866), marquis de Neustrie.
  • probably Eudes († 871), count de Troyes.
  • probably Adalhelm , count de Laon, adviser of Louis II the stammerer in 877 and father of Gautier , count de Laon carried out into 892.

At the time them power struggles between wire of Louis Ier the Piles, the wire of Robert III of Hesbaye took to party for Charles the Bald person. Vis-a-vis the reprisals of Lothaire Ier, they had to leave their Rhenish fields and to take refuge in Francie Occidentale, where Charles the Bald person gave them strongholds.

The counts de Troyes (assumption)

It was believed a long time that these counts de Troyes came from Guillaume, brother of Eudes of Orleans, but of recent research called this filiation in question.

Eudes Ier († 871), count de Troyes (853-858) married to Wandilmodis, girl of Aleran, count de Troyes, and father of:

  • Eudes II , count de Troyes (871 - 876)
  • Robert Carry-quiver , count de Troyes (876 - 886), married to Gisele, girl of Louis II the stammerer
  • a girl, married to Émenon, count de Poitiers

The marquis de Neustrie and duke of France (certainty)

As it is known as previously, it is by supporting Charles the Bald person that Robert the Fort , settled in Francie Occidentale. As of 852, he is laic abbot of Marmoutier, then in 853 count de Tours, of Blois and Anjou. In 858, Charles the Bald person having given to Maine to his son Louis the stammerer, it revolts, and subjects only in 861, receiving exchanges the marquisat of Neustrie of it. It is killed in 866 while fighting against the Viking S, at the time of the Bataille of Brissarthe. Its two sons Eudes and Robert being too young to succeed to him, all its honors were entrusted to a relative of his wife, Hugues the Abbot. Eudes, become adult could not obtain to the paternal heritage before the death of Hugues the Abbot and the Comté of Paris was entrusted to him while waiting. It is there that it was the proof of its valiancy, by pushing back an attack Viking and that he became marquis de Neustrie. With died of Charles the Large one, the Carolingian heir, Charles simple the, was yet only one child and Eudes was elected king de France, entrusting his honors to his/her Robert brother. With died of Eudes, it was Charles the Simple one who was elected king de France, and Robert was the second character of the kingdom. He revolted into 920 and proclaimed king de France, but died shortly after.

Its heir ''' Hugues Large the ''', not having wire or brother ready to receive his loads, declined the crown, leaving it with his brother-in-law Raoul of Burgundy, king from 923 to 936, then with the son of Charles the Simple one, Louis IV of Overseas. He died in 956, the same year as Louis IV, both leaving minor wire and whose tutor was their uncle Brunon, archbishop of Cologne and brother of Othon I {{er}}.

Hugues Capet , the son of Hugues the Large one, was like his/her father the second character of the kingdom. With died of the Carolingian Louis V, in 987, he was elected king de France. Its descendants were the Capétiens.

During their rise, Robertiens tried to extend in Poitou and Burgundy. They lost Normandy, data with the Vikings by the treaty of Saint-Clearly-on-Epte, failed Poitou, but of the brothers of Hugues Capet succeeded in being maintained in Burgundy.
