Robert, marquis of Saint-Wolf-in-Sling , known as Robert of Saint-Wolf , is a character of the work of Marcel Proust With the research of time lost .

Genealogy

Robert of Saint-Wolf is the son of the count and the countess Marie-Aymard de Marsantes. He is the nephew by his mother of the baron de Charlus and the duke and the duchess of Guermantes.

Appearances in the Research

Friend of the narrator, this one made his knowledge with Balbec at the time of its first stay (II-2, 29). It at that time prepares the School of Cavalry of Saumur and is a large reader of Nietzsche and Proudhon. The grandmother of the narrator gives him handwritten letters of this last at the time of her departure, which fills it of joy (II-2, 151). It is always shown very attentive with the health of the narrator whom it regards as an intellectual. Under the influence of Rachel, which is then its mistress, he is supporter of Dreyfus (III, 97). The narrator visits him in Doncières, the city where its regiment is confined: Robert reveals his passion for the military strategy there when it is high with the row of esthetics (III, 98-105). Once it broke with Rachel, it gives up the party supporter of Dreyfus.

In Albertine disappeared , it leaves in Touraine to try to make return Albertine to Paris but fails (VII-1, 59) because Albertine meets it. Married to Gilberte Swann, it misleads it and lies to him constantly (VIII-1, 10) though it likes it. Reversed, it has a connection with Morel which it maintains.

The narrator crosses it in Time Found (VIII-1, 79): he exposes theories as regards strategy whose validity will be checked at the time of the engagements. With the face, he writes long letters with the narrator in whom all his literary sensitivity and its contempt of the germanophobie caused by the conflict appear. He dies heroically in the combat (VIII-1, 208) and will be sincerely regretted by his wife and her aunt, the duchess of Guermantes.

Robert of Saint-Wolf is the friend of the narrator: persuaded that this one is party of its family which opposes her connection with Rachel, he writes a letter to him where he reproaches him for having betrayed it. He forms part, like Charlus, of these “intellectuals and talkers impossible to stop” (VIII-1, 93). Spirit shining and cultivated, it does not have any prejudice of class and does not attach importance that to the nobility of the heart and that of the intelligence.
