Robert de Lénoncourt (C. 1510 - † the February 2nd 1561)

Bishop of Châlons-sur-Marne and Metz (April 22nd, 1551 - December 16th, 1555), archbishop of Spray (March 23rd, 1556 - February 7th, 1560), of Auxerre (October 4th, 1556 - February 7th, 1560), of Sabine (March 13rd, 1560), of Arles (February 7th, 1560 - † on February 2nd, 1561) and of Toulouse (1560-?).

Named cardinal in 1538.

Biography

Wire of Thierry de Lenoncourt, baron de Vignory and of Jeanne de Villé resulting from a noble family of soldiers, Robert de Lenoncourt is born towards 1510 with Lenoncourt (Lorraine). He is the nephew of another Robert de Lenoncourt (? -?), archbishop of Rheims and the uncle of the Cardinal Philippe de Lenoncourt (1527-1592).

Laid off in canon law and civilian, it occupies évéché of Châlons-sur-Marne on May 10th 1535. The consistory of December 20th 1538 names it cardinal and it receives the tiara crimson on March 19th 1540. It is also promoted even of France.

There gives up the load of bishop of Trawl-nets to the profit of its nephew Philippe de Lénoncourt on May 30th 1550, but remains administrator of the diocese until the dedication of its nephew. Abbot of Saint-Remi of Rheims and many other abbeys, he becomes bishop of Metz in 1551 (April 22nd, 1551 - December 16th, 1555).

He is then named successively archbishop of Spray (March 23rd 1556 February -7 1560), of Auxerre (October 4th 1556 February -7 1560), cardinal-bishop of Sabine on March 13rd 1560 and archbishop of Arles on February 7th 1560, load which he preserves until his death. Its nomination with this function is probably former of a few months to the taking date of as this episode shows it: in December 1559, the princess Marguerite of Savoy (wife of Emmanuel-Philibert of Savoy) wishing to probably meet Nostradamus because of the Plague appeared to Nice, is the host, with the Château of Empéri of Salon, of the cardinal of Lenoncourt which has just been appointed archbishop of Arles; this castle is indeed since XIIe century the property of the bishops of this diocese . In 1560 it is also promoted archbishop of Toulouse.

Robert de Lenoncourt takes part in many conclaves in 1549 - 1550, 1555 and 1559 during the Concile of thirty.

In April 1552, during its episcopate and with its complicity, évêché of Metz passes under " protection" Frenchwoman like those of Verdun and Toul (They will become the Three bishoprices). The city, defended by the Duc of Own way is besieged in vain by Charles Quint.

Robert de Lenoncourt dies in the Prieuré of the Charity-on-Loire on February 2nd 1561 where it is buried. Huguenots which occupies the city in 1562 profane its body which they burn or throw in the Loire. ----
