Biography

Teenager, it lives in a vast house georgienne in Lydden close to Canterbury. He learns the battery near the beater from American jazz George Niedorf.

In 1962, Wyatt and Niedorf leave for Majorque where they meet the poet Robert Graves.

Of return in England, it begins its career in 1963 while taking part, with the bass player Hugh Hopper, with the trio of Daevid Allen. It will join then the Hopper brothers, Richard Sinclair (future founder of Caravan) and Kevin Ayers within the Wild Flowers of which he will become the singer.

In summer 1966 it forms the group Soft Machine where it is characterized by a very fine play of battery, near to the Jazz and a voice moving with the accents very characteristic very near of the register to High-against. Following dissensions within the group, it leaves the formation after the fourth album named Fourth , album in which it does not sing (its first album solo, The End off year Ear mentions “out-of-work pop singer, currently one drums with Soft Machine”). Machine software, which completes its first period then, that in which he is greatest success near the public, is directed then towards a music closer to the jazz-rock'n'roll and completely instrumental.

Robert Wyatt founds Matching Mole (which comes can be variation software machine - > soft machine - > matching mole) and leaves a disc the same name (1972) where he sings and plays of the battery and the Mellotron, with Phil Miller with the Guitare, Dave McRae, with the electric Piano and the Orgue, Bill McCormick with the low and David Sinclair with the piano and the organ. In this disc, it joins again with a type of music plus rock'n'roll and more melody, a return to the style of Canterbury of its beginnings, that of Software Machine really any more did not leave him of creative space. He sings again, offering with the title O Caroline a melody line complexes and moving. The group leaves the same year its second disc, produced by Robert Fripp, Little Red Record in which one notes a participation of Brian Eno.

Before recording the 3rd album, it undergoes a serious accident - a fall of four stages, the rumor specifying that it was under the effect of LSD, - which leaves it paralyzed of the two legs. It gives up its group and the battery, and starts a career solo then, where it produces albums and carries out the majority of the musical parts.

In 1974, it leaves the album Rock Bottom , Grand Prix of disc Charles Cros, produced by Nick Mason, with in particular Mike Oldfield, the poet Ivor Cutler, Hugh Hopper, Fred Frith guitarist of the group Henry Cow and the trumpet player South-African Mongezi Feza, " one of the most original chiefs of works of the history of the rock" (Alain Dister). It leaves the same year a recovery I' m has Believer which is a good business success. Its following album Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard is more directed Jazz with influences of African Musique.

During the remainder of the Years 1970, Wyatt works with Henry Cow, Hatfield and the North, Carla Bley and Michael Mantler. Its solo projects are politicized and he becomes spokesperson of the British Communist party. In 1983, its interpretation of the song anti-war of the Falklands of Elvis Costello " Shipbuilding" reached the 35ème place in the classification of the best sales in the United Kingdom.

It returns in 1991 with the album Dondestan regarded by much as its best works since Rock Bottom . In 1997 its album Shleep also receives eulogistic opinions. The same applies to its last album in date Cuckooland (2003). To note in 2005 the exit in a concert of 1974 which existed hitherto only in pirate version.

He collaborated in the last album of David Gilmour, One year Island with the percussions. He incarnates the role of the friend of Dionysos (Sting) in the modern opera composed by Steve Nieve (Deutsche Grammophon) in 2006: Welcome to the Voice at the side of Elvis Costello and Barbara Bonney. On the album Cherished B.B. of Bertrand Burgalat left in 2007, one can intend it to sing on the title This Summer Night , written to share his Alfie wife.

Its new album, left to France in October 2007, is entitled Comicopera . It is divided into three acts, like a comic opera. The last part is mainly sung in Spanish, with in particular a resumption of the famous song Hasta siempre ordering . This album is published at Domino Records, a label primarily comprising artists resulting from the independent rock'n'roll (Arctic Monkeys, Lou Barlow, Four Small fireclay cup, Franz Ferdinand, Stephen Malkmus, Will Oldham, Jim O' Rourke, Elliott Smith, Smog, etc).
